Science & Engineering Week 2013

Friday 29 March 2013

To celebrate National Science & Engineering Week 2013 (15-24 March), students took part in live demonstrations and field trips to embrace the event's 'invention and discovery' theme.

On 19 March, product design students invited guests to their state of the art workshop, demonstrating how inventions can become reality by showcasing the variety of products they designed during their first year.

By blending design, engineering and science, the students also allowed visitors a sneak preview of their latest product, an iPod speaker dock.

A2 physics students went to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich on 22 March, starting with a tour of the cosmos at the planetarium where they examined the motion of the sun and discovered how to measure the distance to stars and galaxies. The group also studied the life cycle of stars, visited the alien exhibition and learned how astronomical instruments such as refracting telescopes and CCD detectors are used. In the afternoon, students walked over the famous Greenwich Meridian and also learned how exoplanets are discovered and measured.
