In May, Richmond upon Thames College (RuTC) 1st year Politics students visited The UK Supreme Court in Westminster. The visit included a short tour of all courtrooms covering the three floors of the building, accessed by the ornate stairway. During the tour they learnt a brief history of The Supreme Court, its composition, role and main functions and had the opportunity to explore the permanent exhibition, providing great insight into the official workings of the establishment.
As part of the trip, students also had the opportunity to delve into some real-life historical cases and the Supreme Court ruling on each of them, further enhancing their knowledge and understanding of the UK political system.
The tour concluded with a visit to the gallery where students had the chance to look at a copy of Magna Carta (a royal charter of rights agreed to by King John of England at Runnymede, near Windsor, in 1215) as well as a collection of artworks of both new and historical relevance.
It was a super informative and important trip for our learners, bringing aspects of their studies into real-world situations.
