Rugby Academy Match Report, 1 October

Friday 10 October 2014

Dan Chappell, describes the Rugby Academy's first match of the season.

In the changing room before the game the atmosphere was incredible, it was electrifying. The Richmond lads had not played together before so this was their first chance to prove themselves to me and the rest of the team! The match kicked off with a bang and the build up in the changing rooms clearly had a positive effect.

The Richmond boys were steaming through tackles and making some massive hits in defence, keeping the Isleworth and Syon side far away from our try line.

About 20 minutes into the game Maluk (13) went over the opposition whitewash after some dazzling footwork through the I&S defence (kick converted by Freddy Foot). There was a very high work rate throughout the rest of the half, neither side taking a step back. Just before the whistle blew for the half, Richmond gave away a penalty, which I&S kicked over to leave the score at 7-3 in the first half.

At half-time the Richmond boys came together and refocused on their defensive structure. We are and will be a team known for our ferocious defence. That clearly stuck in the boys minds and we did not concede any more points for the rest of the game. In the final 10 minutes the workhorse Freddy Foot (8) broke though a bunch of defenders to score our second try after a great line break by the Richmond 13 Ayomi.

Freddy converted his own try and Richmond won the match 14-3 with a great start to a promising season!
