On Saturday 6 July, Catering students and staff took the college’s new food van on it's debut external trip to ‘The Big Bash’, a music festival in Dorking.
The festival was originally set up by a group of friends and has been growing ever since, counting 1,200 visitors this year who enjoyed numerous live bands, DJs and a silent disco. It is an invite only event for local residents and businesses and takes place every other year. Proceeds are used to support children in northern Sudan.
Out of 17 approached colleges and catering providers, RuTC was chosen as the only caterer at the festival. Nonstop from 7pm to 3.30am, Catering students and staff served the crowd food on sustainable palm leaf plates. Dishes included Moroccan chicken with couscous, pickled spiralised vegetables with pomegranate; a 5 bean chili with quinoa and flatbread; Belgian waffles; bacon sandwiches and a full English breakfast.
The food van is giving RuTC’s Catering students a lot of practical experience and enabled this amazing opportunity. The van is also used at the college’s new campus construction site to serve lunch to ISG staff, was used at the end of year staff awards ceremony and offers staff breakfast and lunch over the summer break.
