New sports massage course

Monday 5 August 2013

An exciting new sports massage course at Richmond upon Thames College is to be taught by the former masseuse to a host of well-known celebrities including singing superstar, Usher and former Spice Girl, Geri Halliwell. Karen Smith, a successful personal fitness trainer, will begin teaching the new Sports Massage (Soft Tissue Therapy) Level 3 Certificate with her colleague Una Smith in September.

Before applying her skills and experience as a lecturer, Karen (pictured above, left) spent over a decade as both a personal fitness trainer and sports masseuse. During her career, she has been the personal sports therapist to Riverdance legend Michael Flatley, worked on the hit ITV show Gladiators as well as with the stars of the Party in the Park music concerts including Destiny's Child and Emma Bunton.

Una Smith (pictured above, right) graduated from St Mary's University College where she studied sports science and sports rehabilitation. She worked as a fitness manager, Pilates instructor and sports masseuse before becoming a top lecturer, designing and running sports massages courses at colleges across London.

The new 14-week sports massage course at Richmond upon Thames College is designed to give learners the knowledge, integrity, competency and proficiency to perform sports massage on a range of clients. Learners wishing to take the course need to hold a personal training level 3 certificate (also offered at Richmond upon Thames College) or equivalent. The course will be examined by ActiveIQ and carries 20 CPD points for Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). It is also eligible for a 24+ Loan.
