Pride Month at RuTC Makes its Mark in Pride in London Parade

Friday 1 July 2016

On Saturday 25th May Richmond upon Thames College (RuTC) participated in the Pride in London parade to celebrate the successful advancement of civil rights within the LGBT+ community. A walking group of over 20 college staff and students took part for a second year running.

Staff and students walked for a total of two hours through central London with banners using the hash tag #ProudToBeRuTC. RuTC’s LGBT+ society, SHOUT, were ambassadors for the college and thoroughly enjoyed the unifying event. SHOUT member and A Level Maths, History and Physics student Ezra Smith (18), commented “It’s very important for the college to be represented at events like this. It shows that LGBT+ students will be supported and encouraged to be themselves no matter what.”

RuTC organised further activities to demonstrate the college’s commitment to equality and diversity including the decoration of the college with ‘Pride’ related information, in addition to holding a one minute silence in memory of the victims of the Pulse Nightclub shootings in Orlando. Cait Orton, Student Welfare Officer at RuTC, commented: “RuTC is proud to be working towards a more equal future for the LGBT+ community. Taking a firm stand against discrimination is paramount and the best way to do this is to show how we champion equality.”

The college has recently launched an Equality & Diversity action plan with the intention of promoting equality, increasing diversity and reducing the impact of inequality. As part of the plan, the college has assembled an Equality and Diversity Action Group and members of staff have been chosen as ambassadors to champion certain characteristics of equality and diversity.
