RuTC Students Take Part in Inspiring Mentoring Programme

Tuesday 20 June 2017

This month, a selection of students studying A Level Computer Science or a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT visited global investment company, Barings, to take part in a mentoring programme.

The ten-year-old programme “See the Possibilities”, which was set up by the Global Head of Operational Compliance at Barings, Rob Knight, in collaboration with Robbie Gono, Interim Curriculum Manager for Computing and Maths at RuTC, aims to mentor young people from non-traditional backgrounds and give them an insight into different career paths.

The day was packed with inspiring presentations from senior members of the bank and included advice on how students can secure work experience opportunities.

The students found the event extremely beneficial and a selection of their feedback can be seen below.

“Such an enjoyable experience, would definitely recommend the programme! Opened my eyes to the various professions involving Asset Management, and the type of IT roles available for young people.”

“The experience as a whole was very fruitful for gaining relevant financial knowledge and examples of STP models used within large corporations. I would highly recommend this experience to any student, and appreciate Rob Knight taking the time to train and teach us.”

“The presentations at Barings were very professional, gave some very important and useful academic and life advice that I would agree more students need to be aware of."

“The various speakers were very motivational, especially Marino Valensise and Rob Knight as they both emphasised the importance of hard work. I would recommend this trip to any student especially if they like Investment Banking."
