Foundation Learning & Skills for Life
We have a department dedicated to students with special educational needs. Our friendly specialist trained staff, are committed to providing high levels of support to each student.
Our Foundation Learning provision
At the heart of HRUC’s Foundation Learning provision is a clear and ambitious vision.
-
Vision
To empower every learner, particularly those with high needs, and to support them to:
- develop the confidence, skills, and independence required to progress into mainstream education and employment
- or a rewarding and purposeful adult life.
We are proud to support a diverse cohort of learners, including those with complex needs and those who may have previously faced barriers to education.
Through a carefully structured and highly supportive environment, our students are not only engaging in learning; they are thriving.
-
Inclusive excellence
Our provision is delivered to the highest standards of dignity, care, and specialist expertise, particularly for learners with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) and complex needs.
Our highly trained, dedicated, specialist staff work closely with each learner’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), delivering personalised programmes that are carefully mapped to individual outcomes ensuring progress, independence, and meaningful achievement at every stage.
Staff offer a caring and supportive environment to help students reach their potential and progress to further study or employment.
-
Exceptional learning experiences
We offer a rich and engaging curriculum that goes far beyond the classroom:
- Masterclasses delivered by industry professionals and specialist staff equipping learners with key skills that are required for next steps and world of work
- Competitions that build confidence, teamwork, and pride in achievement
- Work Experience and real-world learning opportunities
- Employer engagement to strengthen employability pathways.
These experiences ensure that learning is relevant, inspiring, and directly linked to future goals. -
Developing the whole learner
Our provision is designed to nurture every aspect of a learner’s development:
- Employability skills: preparing learners for the workplace
- Academic development: building literacy, numeracy, and subject knowledge
- Independent living skills: fostering autonomy and life readiness.
Alongside this, our enrichment programme offers a wide range of activities that support wellbeing, social development, and personal interests, ensuring every learner feels included, motivated, and valued.
What our courses offer
Our courses are suitable for students who have few or no formal qualifications and would like to progress onto a vocational course in the future.
Our aim is to prepare students for life outside of education and to help them to integrate into society. Whether that is to travel or live independently, find employment or develop communication skills.
Students have the opportunity to work in our Apple Tree Café, snack shop and garden, as well as being a part of frequent fundraising activities for various charities.
Progression
Many of our students progress through the courses offered in our Supported Learning department. Some students will then progress into mainstream education, and some will go into the workplace, or live independently.
Progression routes are different for every student, our focus is to ensure that the progression needs of the student are met and that we can help them to transition from education smoothly.
