On the course, you will develop your ability to write various pieces, which demand accuracy in spelling, grammar and punctuation. You will learn to write for real-life situations and gain confidence in reading, writing and speaking so that this will have a positive impact on future prospects.

Entry requirements
There are no set entry requirements. When you enrol, you will be assessed for suitability and the level you can study at. Prior qualifications will be used where appropriate.

Who is the course for?
These are part-time courses suitable for adults (over 19 years old) who have been out of full-time education for some time. Functional Skills is for students who need to improve their reading and writing skills.

Study methods
The course is delivered over 32 weeks of classroom taught lessons for 2 hours a week. You will be expected to combine this with a further 2 hours of guided study a week on an online platform called Educake.

How is the course assessed?
Your teacher will assess speaking and listening in the classroom. At the end of the course, you will take an exam in reading and writing. All four elements need to be passed to gain the full qualification.

Level 2 Functional Skills is a nationally recognised qualification which will open up opportunities in the workplace and for further study.

Where Next – Further Studies
On successful completion of a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification, you will be able to apply for an Access course or an Apprenticeship. Many universities accept Level 2 as an equivalent to a GCSE grade 4.
