This specialist ECITB Level 3 vocational qualification in Design and Draughting is supported by employers and exclusive to Richmond upon Thames College. Students will enhance the skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for a successful working life and good career development, underpinned with the education and training required for employees in the Mechanical, Electrical, Piping, Structural and Instrumentation Control sector.
The course comprises of various mandatory units as part of the ECITB Level 3 Design and Draughting qualification, the ECITB Digital Passport as well as additional units.
Mandatory units:
• Undertake design and draughting activities in accordance with health, safety, environmental and ethical requirements
• Undertake design and draughting activities with effective communication, procedures and behaviours
• Understand the design requirements by interpreting technical information
• Identify, evaluate and understand factors affecting technical design
• Generate creative engineering concepts and design options to solve technical challenges
• Evaluate engineering design options to determine the most effective solution
• Complete engineering designs, produce and handover the final design package.
ECITB Digital Passport:
Alongside the core qualification, students complete the ECITB Digital Passport (online training and assessment) which includes:
• A two-day ECITB CCNSG Health and Safety programme
• Supporting the Net Zero Agenda
• Behavioural Based Safety
• Work experience.

Entry requirements
5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above (including mathematics, English, science, and two other subjects) and a suitable Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Engineering or a minimum of two A-Levels (preferably including mathematics, physics) at grades C or above, which will enable bridging directly onto HNC study.

Who is the course for?
This industry-led study programme is for anyone who aspires to a future career within the Engineering Construction Industry (ECI) and wishes to develop knowledge and skills in engineering design. It is suitable for anyone who has a strong work ethic, enjoys problem solving and is able to work independently but also enjoys participating in teamwork.
This is a work-related programme to enables students to progress into employment, an apprenticeship or higher education -

Teaching face to face and student self-study.

How is the course assessed?
Assessment varies depend on the unit and includes external exams, set tasks, assignments, practical activity and online assessment.
There will also be one-to-one timely reviews with course tutors to review attendance, punctuality and performance. -

Students will participate in employer engagement, work experience and industrial visits. There are also two employer forum events throughout the year for students to showcase their skills through presentations.
The programme also includes the opportunity for students to develop a range of non-technical essential skills required for the workplace such as adaptability, communication, creative thinking, leadership skills, listening, good work ethic, teamwork, time management and develop knowledge and technical skills towards engineering design.
This one-year full-time course is studied Monday to Friday 9.00am-5.00pm in a simulated workplace to increase workplace readiness, alongside project-based learning.
Students are paid a monthly bursary of £100 per week (term time only), from the ECITB, which is subject to satisfactory attendance and punctuality and good performance.
Links with employers include: Worley, Aker solutions, Wood Plc, KBR, Jacobs, Kent Plc, McDermott, RB Plant Construction Ltd with industry talks and trips to employers' workplaces. -

This is an enhanced Level 3 qualification and successful students will be highly employable for a range of roles in the engineering/construction sector in design and draughting.

Where Next – Further Studies
Upon successful completion of the course students could go on to an apprenticeship programme with an engineering/construction company (Design and Draughting). They could also progress onto a relevant Level 4 Higher National Certificate in a relevant subject
