Mechanical Engineering BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma

This is a specialist technical programme with a strong work related emphasis. The course is broadly based and covers essential topics in the field of mechanical engineering. The qualification is widely recognised in all branches of the industry and is an essential qualification for promotion in many organisations. For students who intend to proceed to university, the HNC Diploma provides a very sound technical foundation and a valuable introduction to the type of study skills necessary for degree level courses.

  • Who is the course for?

    The course is suitable for those employed in a technical or managerial capacity in any industry in which mechanical technology is applied.

  • Am I qualified to join the course?

    Formal entry requirements are:
    • BTEC National Diploma/Certificate - Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering
    • AS/A2 levels in Physics and Mathematics at grade D above (preferably C or higher in AS/A2 Mathematics). .

  • What will the course cover?

    The HNC Diploma is a two year course with attendance one full day per week. The course is made up of eight units. Three are mandatory core units which everyone takes and five are specialist units. The specialist units enable you to study particular areas in depth.

    Year 1

    Analytical Methods for Engineers *
    This unit provides fundamental analytical knowledge and techniques needed for all the core units.

    Engineering Science *
    This unit aims to investigate a number of major scientific principles that underpin the design and operations of engineering systems.

    Fluid Mechanics
    The aim of this unit is to extend your knowledge of fluid mechanics and the techniques used to predict the behaviour of fluids in engineering applications.

    Business Management Techniques for Engineers
    This develops your knowledge and understanding of the functions and interfaces of an engineering business.

    Year 2

    Applications of Pneumatics and Hydraulics
    This unit aims to extend your knowledge and understanding of fluid power systems in modern industry.

    Project Design, Implementation and Evaluations *
    Here you will develop skills of independent enquiry by undertaking a sustained investigation of direct relevance to your technical, academic and professional development.

    Mechanical Principles
    In this unit you will cover an extended range of mechanical principles underpinning the design and operation of mechanical engineering systems.

    Engineering Thermodynamics
    In this unit you will be introduced to the principles and laws of thermodynamics and their applications.

    Units marked * are Mandatory Units.

  • What will I be able to do as a result of the course?

    On successful completion of the course:
    You will be able to:

    • interpret and analyse specifications for mechanical products.
    • undertake design and development activities at system and component levels.

    You will have:

    • an understanding of the mathematical and scientific concepts on which the practical material in the course is based.
    • an insight into the way in which a technology based organisation is managed.

    You should be able to use:

    • a variety of modern pieces of laboratory test equipment and simulation software.

    You will have experience of:

    • completing and presenting, as an individual, a substantial report.
  • How will I be taught?

    In your day at college you will experience formal teaching, discussions, laboratory practical work, computer simulation and activities arising from your project. You will have regular constructive feedback on assessment. You will also be expected to spend an additional several hours per week in research and preparation.

  • How is the course assessed?

    The assessment of BTEC Higher National qualifications will be at unit level and there will be an overall grade for the certificate. Each unit will be graded pass, merit or distinction. A pass is awarded for the achievement of all outcomes against the specified assessment criteria. Merit and distinction grades are awarded for higher-level achievement, which may be drawn from the higher-level skills. The BTEC Higher National qualification is assessed using a variety of techniques depending on the nature of the unit being studied. In general there is a mixture of 'in course' assignments (some time-constrained) reports, technical presentations, fieldwork and laboratory work. Through work produced on the project units, the learner will be able to incorporate new skills and other attributes gained from the programme.

  • Will I have a chance to get my own views across?

    You will have constant contact with your teacher throughout the length of the course and there will be an opportunity to evaluate your course at the end.

  • What can the course lead to?

    Completion of the course will enable you to progress in your career as:

    • system engineer or technician
    • design engineer or technician
    • development engineer or technician
    • test engineer or technician
    • servicing engineer or technician
    • sales or field engineer

    The qualification could also assist you in making successful application for supervisory posts. You could also continue with your studies on to a degree course.
