AutoCAD Level 2 (Part 1)

AutoCAD is used by 80% of the companies working in construction and engineering, internationally. This course is a beginner’s course designed for those with a background in engineering, architecture or design and drafting. It is ideal for anyone looking to gain a practical skill in AutoCAD 2D drafting.


It starts by explaining the difference between drawing manually and using a computer for producing and editing technical drawings. It teaches generic techniques common to several drawing packages, as well as some of the features of the latest version of AutoCAD.

  • What qualification or experience do I need to start the course?

    In order to start this course, you should be a confident computer user with an understanding of the Windows environment. You will also need to have access to a computer with AutoCAD running on it.

  • What is expected from me at this level?

    In order to succeed on this course and get the most out of it, you will need to do some work at home – a minimum of 4 hours each week. The online tutorial is available at home, but since only a small part can be covered in class, the more work that you can do at home, the better.

    You will need to bring a flash drive on which to save your work. If you prefer to work on your own PC, you are welcome to do so.

  • How will I be taught?

    During the first two weeks, the drawing environment and basic approach to drawing will be explained and demonstrated. From then on, you will be working from tutorials and exercises with tutor support.

  • How will I be assessed?

    There is no exam, but your progress is monitored regularly in class and informal, regular, feedback is provided. At the end of your student programme, you will be asked to self-assess your own progress and achievement against the expected achievements.

    Those wishing to take the City & Guilds exam will be expected to complete the sample assignments before the course ends.

  • What qualification will I get?

    Successful candidates will be awarded a Richmond upon Thames College Certificate. Previous students have gone on to pass the City & Guilds Exam and the Level 3 qualification.

  • What can the course lead to?

    The College Certificate will allow you to progress to the City & Guilds Level 2 2D which is the first step towards a drafting qualification that is accepted as the industry benchmark for CAD draftpersons. Success on this course means that you will be competent in creating CAD drawings using a number of tools.
