The course is made up of 13 units - 8 in year one and 5 in year two. All units are focused on developing your knowledge and skills within 3D as well as using industry standard compositing software. Every unit will involve drawing as well as photography as these are seen as key skills by the visual effects industry. The units will enable you to study particular areas in depth and, at the end of each year, a production project will give you the opportunity to investigate and display your knowledge of 3D animation, as well as to create visual effects sequences to industry-led briefs.

The UAL Creative Media Production (Visual Effects, Animation and Games) Level 3 course, is designed to develop the highly sought after design and production skills required for the rapidly evolving visual effects industry and focusses on visual effects, animation and games design.
The course, is designed to develop highly sought after design and production skills required for rapidly evolving industries. While developing practical skills needed for a career within the industry, you will also learn how the animation, VFX (Visual Effects) and games industries operate and what drives it through studio visits and practical study.
The course introduces you to the fundamentals of 3D modelling, animation, compositing and virtual reality and prepares you for your next step to university or employment. All students (16-18 year olds and 19+) on level 3 vocational and technical programmes will study two qualifications over the duration of their two-year course. An example of this is BTEC students will study for a 90 credit qualification in the 1st year. Upon successful completion, they will be able to progress to the 2nd year and study a diploma/extended diploma qualification.

How is the course assessed?
The Diploma qualification is delivered through 8 units over a nominal one-year period, with the Extended Diploma being delivered through 5 units.
What skills will I need for the course?
Art and Design, Design Technology, Media studies are all desirable, however if you can demonstrate your interest and commitment through a creative portfolio such as photography, drawing or digital art, then that will also be considered positively.
What formal entry requirements will I need?
Minimum requirements - 5 GCSEs at grade A-C/9- 4 including English and Art at grade 4
Level 2 Diploma at Distinction/Merit plus GCSE English at grade 4.
As the field of digital design is primarily visual, you must submit a portfolio of art and design work at interview.

Are you aged over 19?
Students aged 19 or over on 31st August directly preceding their academic year may be required to pay tuition fees for that year of study. Advanced Learner Loans may be available for students studying at Level 3. If you are aged 19-23 as at 31 August and this is your first full Level 3 you may not have to pay fees.
Students who are 19-24 years old with Education Health and Care Plans (EHCP) issued by the Local Authority are not required to pay course fees (ie tuition fees are free). Students will be required to provide a final copy of their EHCP provided by the LA as evidence.
