Advanced Apprenticeship Supporting the Development of PE and School Sport Level 3

This course is designed as a technical pathway into the provision of Children’s Physical Activity and School Sport delivery whether this is in community sport or in the education sector. The course provides the skills to work within physical education and school sport. For example as a:

  • higher level teaching assistant (HLTA)
  • teaching assistant (TA)
  • sports development officer
  • sports coach, volunteer or leader
  • What qualification or experience do I need to start this course?

    Ideally you will possess coaching/leadership qualifications and/or have progressed from an intermediate or level 2 qualification in a sports/coaching related field. For example:

    • Level 3 BTEC Sport/Sport Science
    • Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship in Activity Leadership/Coaching
    • A coaching/leadership background with relevant NGB coaching qualifications.


  • What experience would help me be suitable for this course?

    Experience in coaching/assisting sports staff in a primary/secondary school/club environment is useful. Possessing sports leader’s qualifications is also advantageous.

  • How will I be taught?

    Apprenticeships are designed for on the job learning and you will be based in a primary/secondary school setting and learn while you are there. A variety of teaching methods / strategies will be used depending on the unit / practical skills delivered.

  • How is the course assessed?

    You will be assessed through a variety of methods such as observations, role plays, Q&A, practical workshop exercises, presentations and coursework.

  • What qualification will I get?


    • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport
    • Level 3 Award in Employment Awareness in Active Leisure and Learning
    • Functional Skills Qualification in English/Maths at Level 2 (if not already achieved).


  • What skills will I gain?

    This apprenticeship will further develop your knowledge and skills in leaderships and coaching in order to allow you to further support the delivery of physical education and school sport programmes in a school sport and/or coaching environment.

  • What can the course lead to?

    Employment, higher apprenticeships or degree.
