This qualification enables you to gain the knowledge and skills required to be able to provide sports massage (soft tissue therapy) to a range of clients who have no underlying pathological conditions.

  • What is the course about and how might it benefit me?

    You will gain an understanding in the following areas:

    • Anatomy and physiology for exercise and sports massage
    • Principles of exercise and fitness
    • Sports massage techniques
    • Assessing clients and treatment planning
    • Assisting tissue repair
    • Providing professional practice
    • Providing post-treatment care
  • What qualification or experience do I need to start the course?

    It is desirable that you hold a Level 3 Personal Training qualification or a Level 3 qualification in Anatomy and Physiology and you must be 18 years of age before you can gain your qualification.

  • How will I be taught?

    The course involves a mixture of classroom-based activities and practical application of sports massage techniques. It is essential that you are able to take part in both the theory and practical elements of the course. You are also expected to complete some pre-reading (your tutor will guide you on this on successful enrolment on your course) from your manual prior to the start of the course.

    Further reading outside of the classroom is always recommended to any learner. In regards to the practical element you will be expected to practice in your own time to build your confidence and perfect your technique.

  • How will I be assessed?

    Your progress will be assessed regularly throughout the duration of the course. Your tutor will provide formative feedback when necessary to help with your understanding.

    You are required to complete and fully achieve:

    • 3 x multiple choice theory exams on Anatomy and Physiology, Principles of Fitness and Anatomy and Physiology for Sports Massage.
    • 5 x worksheets including Assisting Tissue Repair and professional practice.
    • 1 x Observed Summative practical assessment including post-treatment care.
  • What qualification will I get?

    If successful you will achieve a CYQ Level 3 Certificate in Sports Massage (Soft Tissue Therapy).

  • What can the course lead to?

    Upon successful completion and achievement of this qualification you wil be able to apply for full membership of the Sports Therapy Organisation (STO). This membership enables registration with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), the UK regulator for Complementary Healthcare, and entitles learners to use the title Registered Sports Massage Practitioner.

    This qualification also allows you to work either within a health and fitness club setting and/or self-employed. As a progression route you may consider broadening your expertise by taking more specialist training such as working with older people, disabled people or pregnant women.
