Fitness Instructing (Gym) Certificate Level 2

This qualification is aimed at those who want to pursue a career in the health and fitness industry as a fitness instructor in the context of gym-based exercise. You will gain an understanding in anatomy and physiology, how to maintain health, safety and welfare in a variety of fitness environments, including the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults. You will also achieve the skills, knowledge and experience of how to programme safe and effective exercise for a range of clients, including the health benefits of physical activity and the importance of healthy eating.

Included in the fee are two manuals essential for the duration of the course; Mandatory Units Manual and Gym Based Exercise Manual. These manuals contain all the information required to achieve this qualification and will be referred to consistently throughout the course. It is also a requirement to ensure you have practical kit as you will be required to take part in physical activity.

  • What qualification or experience do I need to start the course?

    There are no formal prerequisites to enrol on the course. It is recommended that you are a current gym user and have a keen interest in motivating others to maintain their health and fitness.

    Ideally you will be working in a gym environment to ensure you gain as much experience as possible to aid your understanding and confidence in instructing physical activity.

  • How will I be taught?

    The course involves a mixture of classroom-based activities and practical activities in a gym environment. It is essential that you are able to take part in both the theory and practical elements of the course. You are also expected to complete some pre-reading (your tutor will guide you on this in your interview) from your manual prior to the start of the course.

    Further reading outside of the classroom is always recommended to any learner. In regards to the practical element, you will be expected to practice in your own time to build your confidence and perfect your technique.

  • How will I be assessed?

    Your progress will be assessed regularly throughout the duration of the course. Your tutor will provide formative feedback when necessary to help with your understanding.

    You are required to complete and fully achieve mandatory worksheets included in your LAP: 

    • Health, Safety and Welfare in a Fitness Environment
    • Know How to Support Clients Who Take Part in Exercise and Physical Activity

    You are required to take two multiple choice theory assessment exams, achieving a minimum of 70%, on the following:

    • Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise
    • Principles of Exercise Fitness and Health

    You will also be required to plan, deliver and review gym-based exercise. You will be assessed on the completion of worksheets and practical delivery of your planned session. 

    Practical assessment will be scheduled a agreed times/dates in the last few weeks of the course. Initial theory assessments will occur during the course, with a re-sit opportunity for all students at the end.

  • What qualification will I get?

    If successful you will achieve an Active IQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym) (QCF). This qualification provides access onto the Register of Exercise Professionals at Level 2.

  • What can the course lead to?

    Upon successful completion and achievement of this qualification you will be able to work as a fitness instructor within a health and fitness club setting. As a progression route you may be able to enrol (upon recommendation) onto the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training.
