Public Services Diploma Level 2

This one-year course is designed to give students an insight into a variety of disciplines within the Public Services sector including armed forces, police, fire and ambulance services. Students will be given the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of the industry through practical and theoretical assessments in a variety of units such as the role and work of the Public Services, employment opportunities, health and fitness, volunteering and sport and recreation in the Public Sector.

  • What will I study and learn?

    The course is assessed internally through coursework and through external exams.

    Units include:

    • Working Skills in the Public Sector
    • Role and Work of the Public Sector
    • Citizenship, Society and The Public Sector
    • Employment in the Public Sector
    • Health, Fitness and Lifestyle for the Public Services
    • Sport and Recreation in the Public Sector
    • Volunteering for the Public Sector

    You will be working individually and as part of a group. Most lectures are classroom based but will involve practical elements where applicable. Volunteering in the Public Service is an expected part of the course.

    In addition you will study for a qualification in English and/or Maths.

    You will also have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports activities at the college in your free time.

  • How is the course assessed?

    The course has core, mandatory and optional specialist units that are internally assessed through practical and coursework based assessments. In addition a percentage of the course is externally assessed through two separate exams that are set and marked by Pearson in June 2015.

    Coursework tasks are varied and may take the form of practical assessments, role plays, presentations and video assessments.

  • What courses would combine well with this course?

    If you have not gained a grade C or above in English and maths you will need to resit one or both of these subjects. If you intend to progress to the extended diploma qualifications you will need to have passed one of these resits at grade C.

    You might also join one of the sports or academy teams which would be a commitment on your part to several hours of training, coaching and competitions each week.

  • What skills will I need for the course?

    You must be able to show that you can benefit from a level 2 course in Public Services. You will be expected to discuss your interests and achievements at interview.

  • What formal entry requirements will I need?

    You will need:

    4 GCSEs at grade D (including English and Maths)
    BTEC level 1 Diploma in a relevant subject
    English and Maths GCSE at grade D

  • What could this course lead to?

    The course will predominately lead to a level 3 qualification in Public Services provided a merit grade is achieved overall at level 2. This is in addition to a successful attendance and tutor progress report. Alternative progression is into a role in the Public Service.

  • Are there any costs involved?

    Student materials will cost £30 approximately. You may also have to pay for occasional trips.
