Public Services BTEC Level 1 Diploma

The course is designed to introduce students to the foundations of pursuing a future career in Public Services ( e.g armed forces, police, fire, ambulances services) through developing personal skills and qualities such as leadership and teamwork. Individually, you will be required to complete coursework on a range of topics including practical teamwork and planning and participating in an event. Successful completion of this course can lead on to the Level 2 Extended Certificate in Public Services.

  • What will I study and learn?

    Over the year you will study a range of technical units that may include:

    • Public Service Careers
    • Improving Health and Fitness for Entry into the Uniformed Public Service
    • Personal Skills for the Public Service
    • Practical Teamwork in the Public Service
    • Planning and Participating in An Event
    • Public Serivce Incident
    • Public Serivce Project

    You will be working individually and as part of a group. Lectures are normally classroom based. A day visit to an outdoor activity centre are features of this programme.

    In addition you will study for a qualification in English and Maths at level 1 or 2.

    You will also have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports activities at the college in your free time.

  • How is the course assessed?

    Assessment is 100% practical and written coursework.

    Coursework tasks are varied. You will learn how to plan and take part in activities such as events and teamwork in the Public Service. As well as improving your fitness for entry into the Uniformed Public Service.

  • What courses would combine well with this course?

    Students will be expected to take functional skills Maths and English as part of this course.

  • What skills will I need for the course?

    You must be able to show that you can benefit from following a level 1 course in Public Services. You will be expected to discuss your interests and achievements at the interview.

  • What formal entry requirements will I need?

    You should have a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grades E-F with English and Maths at minimum grade E.

  • What could this course lead to?

    The course will predominately lead into entry onto the level 2 Extended Certificate in Public Services, provided a pass is gained in all units at Level 1. This is required in addition to demonstrating competency in English and Maths functional skills along with a positive tutor reference and attendance report. Alternative progression is into an entry role in the Public Services industry.

  • Are there any costs involved?

    Student materials will cost £30 approximately. You may also need to pay for occasional trips that may cost £50 approximately* Prices vary depending on event chosen.
