Performing and Production Arts (Drama) Level 3

The UAL Level 3 Diploma in Performing and Production Arts - Drama course, is designed for students interested in a career in drama or theatre. You will study different processes involved with the creation of drama You will devise, rehearse and perform. You will create work for different audiences and different theatre spaces and work on small, short performance projects as well as full length plays.

We will develop your skills and understanding of how drama and theatre operate in different contexts and for different audiences. The course includes professional practices, arts in the community, acting techniques, vocal skills and physical theatre. You will explore several genres and styles of work including devised and text based, different influences and historical contexts as you work across a number of performance projects

You will need to be a dynamic, empathetic, generous person who is prepared to take risks. You will need to be able to integrate with a range of people and their different ideas. Working together as group is a vital part of the Drama course.

The course is a practical exploration that requires commitment, discipline and never ending energy. You will be expected to give up some evenings, occasional weekends and be willing to take part in extra rehearsals!

STARTS IN SEPTEMBER

All students (16-18 year olds and 19+) on level 3 vocational and academic programmes will study two qualifications over the duration of their two-year course.

An example of this is BTEC students will study for a 90 credit qualification in the 1st year. Upon successful completion, they will be able to progress to the 2nd year and study a diploma/extended diploma qualification.

A level students will study a two year linear A Level programme. At the end of their 1st year, students will sit internally assessed exams.

  • What will I study and learn?

    This is a unit based qualification with assessment points throughout the year. The Diploma is the first component of a full Extended Diploma which is completed over 2 years.

    You will research many aspects of dramatic art, You will examine a range of styles and types of drama to develop your understanding of the art form. You will apply the context of dramatic art to your own ideas for performance. You will keep a digital record of your practical work and reflections as well as undertaking written assignments.

    External workshops and visits will add to the range of your experience.

  • How is the course assessed?

    At the end of the first year you will have your progress reviewed to ascertain your suitability for completing the qualification.

    The qualification is assessed over 18 units over 2 years (a combination of written work, workshops and performance). The course is continually assessed. Some projects are student and staff assessed on criteria set out at the start of the project and some units are externally assessed. You must attend regularly and punctually, achieving at least a pass to achieve the qualification. Students are awarded pass, merit or distinction, according to their achievement.

  • What skills will I need for the course?

  • What formal entry requirements will I need?

    Minimum Requirements - 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C/9-4 including English and Drama at grade 4.

    OR

    Level 2 qualification in Performing and Production Arts at Distinction/Merit plus GCSE English at grade 4.

    You will be invited to attend an audition.

  • What could the course lead to in higher education or careers?

    The UAL Level 3 Diploma in Performing and Production Arts – Drama is the first year of a nationally recognised qualification and is designed to prepare you for a career in the performing arts industry. It offers progression the Extended Diploma also in Drama. Achievement of the Extended Diploma is required for application to Higher Education.

    You can progress to university or drama school to study a performance related subject. Some students go directly into professional work.

  • Are there any costs involved?

    £100 studio fee for each year of the course.

    The money will pay for visits to the theatre professional workshops and productions.
