Performing and Production Arts (Dance) Level 3

 

At Richmond upon Thames College we offer a dedicated Dance course; UAL Level 3 Diploma in Performing and Production Arts – Dance, which offers a range of dance disciplines. We are passionate about dance and have three fully equipped dance studios, you will be given the opportunity to perform in our 200 seat theatre as well as at other venues. We pride ourselves on offering a diverse student experience.

Studying dance at Richmond upon Thames College is a remarkable experience. You will not only be fully supported during your course by our excellent dance teachers, you will be on a course which has an outstanding achievement rate.

Previous experience of dance is required, however, formal training is not essential. Your skills will be assessed at the audition, so if you have drive and passion and a desire to develop your dance technique then we want to hear from you!

All students (16-18 year olds and 19+) on level 3 vocational and technical programmes will study two qualifications over the duration of their two-year course. An example of this is BTEC students will study for a 90 credit qualification in the 1st year. Upon successful completion, they will be able to progress to the 2nd year and study a diploma/extended diploma qualification.

Students aged 19 or over on 31st August directly preceding their academic year may be required to pay tuition fees for that year of study. Advanced Learner Loans may be available for students studying at Level 3. If you are aged 19-23 as at 31 August and this is your first full Level 3 you may not have to pay fees.

Students who are 19-24 years old with Education Health and Care Plans (EHCP) issued by the Local Authority are not required to pay course fees (ie tuition fees are free). Students will be required to provide a final copy of their EHCP provided by the LA as evidence.

  • What will I study and learn?

    This is a unit based qualification with assessment points throughout the year. The Diploma is the first component of a full Extended Diploma which is completed over 2 years.

    Dance transforms images, ideas and feelings into sequences of movement. It allows people to discover, explore and develop their movement vocabulary and create dynamic movement material. It is a practical based course that focuses on technique, performance and choreography. You will study the following styles of dance:

    ◦Ballet
    ◦Jazz
    ◦Musical Theatre
    ◦Contemporary
    ◦Urban
    ◦Tap

    As part of the course you will also study business, historical context, dance fitness and anatomy.

  • How is the course assessed?

    This course consists of 12 units over two years. These are continually assessed through regular assignments and practical projects. Assignments may range from assessed rehearsals or performances to project based written work. To progress to the second year students must successfully complete all first year units.

    The qualification attracts the same UCAS points as three A Levels.

  • What courses would combine well with this course?

    You will be offered the opportunity to take an A Level subject alongside your Performing Arts (Dance) Level 3 qualification providing you have sufficient GCSE points. Subjects which are popular with dance students include theatre studies, English, photography and business. There are many other A Level courses offered at the college. You can discuss any additional subject you would like to study during the interview stage.

  • What skills will I need for the course?

  • What formal entry requirements will I need?

    Minimum Requirements - 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C/9-4 including English and Dance at grade 4

    OR

    Level 2 Diploma Performing and Production Arts at Distinction/Merit plus GCSE English at grade 4.

    GCSE dance is not essential, however, previous dance experience is required.

    You will be invited to attend an interview and audition.

  • What could the course lead to in higher education or careers?

    The UAL Level 3 Diploma in Performing and Production Arts – Dance is the first year of a nationally recognised qualification and is designed to prepare you for a career in the performing arts industry. It offers progression the Extended Diploma also in Dance. Achievement of the Extended Diploma is required for application to Higher Education.

  • Are there any costs involved?

    £100 studio fee for each year of the course.

    The money will pay for visits to the theatre professional workshops and productions.
