Music Performance and Production Level 3

The Music Performance and Production Level 3 UAL Diploma will develop your skills in music across a wide range of disciplines in both performance and production; however, you will be able to specialise in one of these areas later in the course.

Music performance develops your skills as a solo and ensemble performer, including effective practice techniques. Music production focuses on composing and producing music using software as well as studio recording, sound creation and live sound.

All students will underpin their learning with a solid foundation of contextual research, ear training and general musical understanding.

All students (16-18 year olds and 19+) on level 3 vocational and technical programmes will study two qualifications over the duration of their two-year course. An example of this is BTEC students will study for a 90 credit qualification in the 1st year. Upon successful completion, they will be able to progress to the 2nd year and study a diploma/extended diploma qualification.

  • How is the course assessed?

Each unit has formal assessments, usually at the end of each half term. You have to pass each unit to achieve the overall qualification. Each assessment is graded against clear criteria, which you will become familiar with in advance. You will be introduced to what you are expected to learn and offered guidance and opportunities for practice and development throughout each project. Assessments include written research/blogs, composing and production folios and performances. Your final unit will be a large-scale project that combines the skills you have learned.

  • What skills will I need for the course?

You should have experience in music performance and/or composition, production or recording and the willingness to learn new skills to help you succeed in a large but very competitive field. A basic knowledge of the music keyboard is desirable.

  • What formal entry requirements will I need?

Minimum requirement - 5 GCSEs at grade A- C/9-4 including English and a subject relevant to your chosen area of study at grade 4 and experience of performing on a musical instrument or voice is preferred but not essential. You will be invited to attend an audition.

  • What could the course lead to in higher education or careers?

There are many higher education courses in music in which you can focus on performing, composing, production, sound design, sound for videos/TV/games or other fields. Staff will help you choose and apply for the right course.

Apprenticeships are now starting in musical fields and our Careers department will be happy to discuss this with you.

  • Are there any costs involved?

You will need to buy high-quality closed back headphones as detailed listening is an essential skill for all aspects of your course. A USB data stick is a very useful investment to back- up your work.

Students aged 19 or over on 31st August directly preceding their academic year may be required to pay tuition fees for that year of study.
