French Conversation

This is a beginners' course aimed at improving your skills in speaking and listening to conversational French in everyday situations. The course aims to enable students to communicate simply in French, to understand and use the language for travel or social purposes and to enjoy and appreciate the cultural background of French-speaking countries. Course contents will include: Greetings, asking about meaning and pronunciation of words, numbers, spelling, food and drink, etc.

  • What qualification or experience do I need to start the course?

    There are no formal entry requirements for this course, just an interest in languages or travel.

  • How will I be taught?

    The course is based on the communicative approach and you will be expected to participate in group discussions. The course will cover;

    • Active students' interaction
    • Emphasis on speaking and listening skills
    • Pair and group work
    • Role plays
    • Use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate


    You will be based in one of our classrooms or computer suites if relevant. Teaching will take the form of demonstrations, lectures, individual and group workshop activities, presentations and discussions.

  • How will I be assessed?

    The teacher will record your progress and provide informal regular feedback throughout the course. At the end of your study you will be asked to self-assess your own progress and achievement against the expected achievements as outlined above.

  • What qualification will I get?

    At the end of the course you will receive a Richmond upon Thames College certificate of achievement.

  • What can the course lead to?

    The course is designed to help you develop your confidence in speaking French abroad, whether socially or when asking for information. The basic skills learned on the course should enable you to communicate and converse with other speakers of the language and possibly provide an opportunity for progression towards other part-time or full-time courses, including more advanced level French courses.
