Health & Social Care

You will study elements from Health and Social Care and Early Years (Childcare). This will provide you with a broad understanding about each subject and will allow you make an informed decision about progressing to your chosen subject area.

Early Years units include (10 credits):

  • Human growth and development
  • Practical health and safety when with young children
  • Understanding play
  • UnderstandingsSafeguarding in early years settings

    Health and Social Care units incliude (10 credits):
  • Person-centred support in health and social care
  • Understand principles and values in Health and Social Care
  • Introduction to communication in Health and Social Care
  • Planning a healthy diet
  • Entry requirements

    2 GCSEs English and/or Maths grade 2 (or equivalent) or above and a successful interview. It is important that you can act independently and safely with children. For this reason, you will need 2 personal references, one being the usual reference provided by your school. This needs to show a satisfactory commitment to working with children of this age. School work, attendance, experience in child care, voluntary work in play schemes, babysitting or any other experience of working and helping children would demonstrate this commitment.

  • Who is the course for?

    The course is an ideal starting point that provides you with transferable study and organisational skills in order to progress to the next level. This course is designed for learners interested in working in the 'caring' profession of either Health and Social Care or Childcare. This qualification forms the first step in a clear progression route through to vocational learning.

    Students will learn to following instructions, develop problem solving skills, improve personal productivity, resilience Skills, and action planning for your own development.

  • How is the course assessed?

    Assessment of your coursework is carried out at the end of each unit to confirm understanding and ability to move on to the next unit. All students undertake a work placement. External OCNLR moderated qualification

    In order to complete a full study programme, which is required by the Department for Education for 16-19 year old students are not yet at a Level 2 standard, you will also study Functional Skills/GCSE in English and Maths and will be required to undertake work experience and get involved in various enrichment activities offered at the college.
