Early Years/Childcare

This qualification will provide the learners with the knowledge and awareness of a range of topics pertaining to childcare and development.

They will learn about theoretical perspectives and philosophical approaches to development and theories of teams and how they work.

The course incorporates a range of assessment methods including a longitudinal study, internal and external assessments as well as competence in a real work environment.

Course themes include: Health and wellbeing, legislation, frameworks and professional practice, play, development and learning for school readiness, professional development.

  • Entry requirements

    The preferred entry requirements for level this CACHE/NCFE level 3 qualification are 4 GCSEs grade 9-4 (grade C and above) preferably including English and maths. This is subject to interview and references. Any learners accepted without the required English and Maths qualifications will be required to re-take them alongside their vocational programme.

  • Who is the course for?

    Learners aged between 16-19 years old (or learners with an EHCP) who wish to equip themselves with the practical skills and knowledge to prepare them for future employment as a childcare practitioner.

    From this this will be able to seek employment with children from birth to 5 years and have gained knowledge of children aged 5 to 7 years. This qualification gives the learners full licence to practice in an early years setting. This course could be fully funded for learners aged 24 and above.

  • Study methods

    This course includes 23 mandatory units which amount to 486 guided learning hours. As a condensed course, there are currently no optional units.

    Learners will spend 2 days per week in a child care setting. This will include a primary school placement and day nursery placements. They will obtain a minimum of 350 hours over the year.

    Whilst in placement they will be allocated to a supervisor who will support them to develop their skills. They will also be visited and observed on their competencies across the qualification by an assessor who will sign their progress off once proven skills are witnessed and maintained.

  • How is the course assessed?

    To gain this qualification the learner will need to: Pass all units, complete longitudinal study, show competence in a real work environment in the form of assessment of activities across all age ranges.

    Assessment is carried out at the end of each unit to confirm understanding. All students will undertake a 350 (minimum) hour work placement across the year in suitable early years settings, the placement should include babies and young children and they will be assessed in placement.

    Placements are required for achievement of this qualification and should be undertaken in at least two different settings. Learners must achieve: 23 mandatory units , 486 guided learning hours.

  • Where Next – Job Opportunities

    This qualification provides learners with the following job opportunities:

    • EY practitioner in day nursery/nursery schools/reception classes in primary schools
    • Assistant or early years practitioner in children's centres
    • Pre-school worker.

      Upon achievement of this qualification it is intended that learners will be able to enter the workforce as Early Years Educators, with a full licence to practice in an early years setting. It is suitable for individuals with a level of responsibility, working in a variety of childcare settings.

    Kingston University Foundation Degree in Early Years Childhood Studies with Richmond College or other higher level early years workforce qualifications.
