Art, Design and Media UAL Level 1

Do you like art, drawing and practical work? Do you like film, photography, and animation? This course will give you an introduction to all these areas and will enable you to gain skills and experience using a wide range of art, design and media techniques and software through lots of practical workshops and projects.

Qualification title: UAL Level 1 Diploma in Art, Design and Communication

  • What will I study and learn?

    You will complete a series of projects and explore graphic design and animation software, digital photography, printmaking, model making, drawing and film as well as editing animated sequences using a range of materials and techniques. You will learn how to research and go on trips to museums and galleries to look at the work of artists and designers. You will learn how to follow a design brief and how to write about your work.

    The projects cover a range of art skills and will cover materials and techniques which include and are not limited to the following:


    2D skills:drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, experimental darkroom photography


    3D skills:ceramics, metalwork, woodwork, sculpture, textiles


    4D/digital skills:animation, photography, digital artwork

    You will have the opportunity to work with specialist materials and technology in our designated workshop spaces.

    Students will also undertake work experience as part of the course. 

  • How is the course assessed?

    The course is made up of six units, each with its own assessment criteria. To pass you must complete all 6 units. You will be given lots of support and regular feedback from your teachers. The final unit of the year is a personal project which is marked at Pass, Merit or Distinction, giving you your grade for the qualification.

  • What courses would combine well with this course?

    While on the course you will continue to study Maths and English if you do not yet have Level 2 qualifications in these subjects.

  • What skills will I need for the course?

    YYou need to have an interest in Art and Design, Media, Animation or Photography. You should like doing art and drawing or making things in your spare time.

  • What formal entry requirements will I need?

    No formal qualifications are required. You will need an assessment and interview and must be motivated, committed and have a positive attitude. The course is designed for school leavers who are able to work at a level equivalent to GCSE grades 4-2/D-F.

  • What could this course lead to?

    After finishing this course, you could go on to study for a Creative Digital Media Production Level 2 qualification, Art and Design Level 2 qualification or a Creative & Digital Media Intermediate Apprenticeship.

  • Are there any costs involved?

    You may wish to have your own art materials to work with at home.

  • Are you aged over 19?

    Students aged 19 or over on 31st August directly preceding their academic year may be required to pay tuition fees for that year of study. Advanced Learner Loans may be available for students studying at Level 1. If you are aged 19-23 as of 31 August and this is your first full Level 1 you may not have to pay fees.
    Students who are 19-24 years old with Education Health and Care Plans (EHCP) issued by the Local Authority are not required to pay course fees (i.e., tuition fees are free). Students will be required to provide a final copy of their EHCP provided by the LA as evidence.
