Art and Design Level 3

The Art and Design Level 3 offers a fantastic opportunity to explore a range of exciting creative pathways. The first year is structured to allow you to shape an individual route, selecting the assignments that you are most excited by, which might involve studying specialist techniques such as ceramics, glass and metal, mixed media image creation, textiles, garment construction, printmaking and photography. Alongside the practical work, you will also have the chance to develop your research skills alongside an understanding of visual language and how it is used to communicate ideas and concepts in art and design.

In the second year you will extend your knowledge of elements of fine art, communication and design. This will prepare you for entry into a diverse range of higher education courses and careers within the creative industries.

All students (16-18 year olds and 19+) on level 3 vocational and technical programmes will study two qualifications over the duration of their two-year course. An example of this is BTEC students will study for a 90 credit qualification in the 1st year. • What will I study and learn?

An important part of a full time art and design course is having the opportunity totry the different types of art & design work before making a decision about your future. The early parts of the course will introduce you to creative working in 2D, 3D and time based media. During this stage you will have the opportunity to be exploratory and experimental. Only by trying different ways of working will you know where all your skills and interests lie. As the course progresses you will become more selective in the type of work you produce and your acquisition of skills becomes more specialised. During the second year of the course students elect to study in broad specialist groups where students can cover options such as:

    • Textiles, fashion, interiors and architecture, products and accessories
    • Communications, graphics, animation and film
    • Fine art, painting, print, sculpture and installation

You will have the opportunity to work with specialist materials and technology in our designated workshop spaces, enabling you to create a dynamic and exciting portfolio suitable for university or apprenticeship interviews.
