Construction, Building Services/Plumbing

You will be introduced to a range of construction ideas. You will also be given the chance to improve your English and Maths. After you have completed the course, you will be in a position to make your mind up about which construction discipline you prefer.

You will study:

  • Being organised
  • Developing a personal progression plan
  • Working with others
  • Researching a topic
  • Drawing a plan of a room
  • Making carpentry joints
  • Fixing a water pipe
  • Costing a small repair job
  • Making minor repairs in a house
  • Making an electric circuit.
  • Entry requirements

    You should have an interest in the subject area you are applying for. There are no formal entry requirements but we will assess your level of English and maths to make sure you are working at Entry Level 3 or above. This is to ensure you are able to meet the course requirements.

  • Who is the course for?

    You should be interested in learning a craft for the construction industry and enjoy working with your hands. Some of the work may be quite heavy so you should be fit.

  • Study methods

    The programme uses a combination of traditional classroom teaching, practical work and use of online resources.

  • How is the course assessed?

    The course is assessed through a mixture of practical assessments and a written workbook portfolio. Your assessed portfolio will be a workbook in which you write about how you completed your practical tasks in the workshops, for example what you have made in the workshops.

    All students will have to provide appropriate personal protective equipment (overalls and safety boots at approximately £70.

  • Where Next – Further Studies

    You can progress to the Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery or Plumbing. Alternatively you can progress to the Level 2 Construction and Built Environment.
