Graphics and Digital Communication Foundation Degree Level 5

  • Who is this course for?

    The Foundation Degree in Graphic & Digital Communication is suitable for those looking to progress onto their first level 4 course or for those wishing to update their existing skills graphic design skills. The qualification covers the fundamentals of Graphic & Digital Communication and enables graduates to be flexible and adaptable within the rapidly changing creative media sector. There is an emphasis on professional practice and client relationships in preparation for employment.

  • What qualification or experience do I need to start the course?

    Applicants will be required to have a level 3 qualification in a related subject either:

    A L3 Extended Diploma Qualification in Art & Design or Graphic Design.

    An A level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject (min 96 UCAS points).

    A Foundation Diploma in Art & Design.

    Access to HE Diploma. All applicants will be invited to interview for a portfolio review.

    For non-native speakers of English, the English level requirement will be IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.

  • What will the course cover?

    The Foundation Degree will contain both practical and theoretical modules to cover a broad range of technical skills, knowledge and hands on development. The programme will provide innovative vocational training in graphic and digital communications and is designed to be responsive to meet the skills gap within the expanding communications sector. The programme will also offer a real opportunity for more mature students to retrain and/or update skills and knowledge.


    There is a work experience component within the course to introduce students to the realities of working as a professional with emphasis on client need and relationship.


    This programme will have a strong focus on responsible design, supporting students to investigate design challenges through historical, present and future issues and to explore their values as a practitioner in an ever changing world.

  • How will I be taught?

    The programme consists of a range of modules each designed to develop and build on each student’s Graphic Communication knowledge, skills and work related practise. Within each module, students will be supported and encouraged to develop their own personal response to the assignment briefs. As part of the programme visits and exhibitions will be arranged to inform research, ideas and concepts. Live projects, team working, commissions and visiting speakers will also make up the programme. Students will receive regular and thorough feedback throughout each stage of each module. All forms of assessment are part of the learning process and are intended to be helpful and informative.

  • How will I be assessed?

    The course consists of eleven modules, six at level 4 and five at level 5. Each module will be internally assessed through a mixture of coursework portfolio projects, presentations, and written submissions. Learners must pass all modules for the full award for the Foundation Diploma which is graded at Pass Merit or Distinction.

  • What will I be able to do as a result of the course?

    Students who successfully complete the Foundation Degree may want to pursue their studies at St Mary’s University Twickenham where there is a curriculum transition from the Foundation Diploma at levels 4-5 and the level 6 of St Mary’s BA (Hons) Design and Visual Communication course.


    Alternatively, applicants can enter the job market. The Foundation Degree is committed to equipping students with the knowledge, skills and attributes to secure graduate level employment by being responsive to future skills in the Graphics and digital communications sector.
