Art and Design Level 3 Extended Diploma

The Art and Design Level 3 Extended Diploma offers a fantastic opportunity to explore a range of exciting creative pathways. The first year is structured to allow you to shape an individual route, selecting the assignments that you are most excited by, which might involve studying specialist techniques such as ceramics, glass and metal, mixed media image creation, textiles, garment construction, printmaking and photography. Alongside the practical work, you will also have the chance to develop your research skills alongside an understanding of visual language and how it is used to communicate ideas and concepts in art and design.

In the second year you will extend your knowledge of elements of fine art, communication and design. This will prepare you for entry into a diverse range of higher education courses and careers within the creative industries.

STARTS IN SEPTEMBER

  • What will I study and learn?

An important part of a full time art and design course is having the opportunity totry the different types of art & design work before making a decision about your future. The early parts of the course will introduce you to creative working in 2D, 3D and time based media. During this stage you will have the opportunity to be exploratory and experimental. Only by trying different ways of working will you know where all your skills and interests lie. As the course progresses you will become more selective in the type of work you produce and your acquisition of skills becomes more specialised. During the second year of the course students elect to study in broad specialist groups where students can cover options such as:

    • textiles, fashion, interiors and architecture, products and accessories
    • Communications, graphics, animation and film
    • Fine art, painting, print, sculpture and installation

You will have the opportunity to work with specialist materials and technology in our designated workshop spaces, enabling you to create a dynamic and exciting portfolio suitable for university or apprenticeship interviews.

  • How is the course assessed?

The course consists of 13 units of art & design theory and practice; all units must be passed to achieve the qualification. You will receive support and feedback on your progress regularly. At the end of both the first and second years, students undertake a personal project, which is marked at Pass, Merit or Distinction, and which is the awarding grade for the qualification at Diploma level (at the end of the first year) and Extended Diploma level (in year 2). The Extended Diploma attracts the same UCAS points as 3 A levels.

  • What courses are combined with this qualification?

You will be taking Maths GCSE if you have not achieved a C grade in this subject.

  • What skills will I need for the course?

You will need an enthusiasm for art and design, curiosity and the ability to work hard.

  • What formal entry requirements will I need?

    You will need:

5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English at grade 4

    OR

Level 2 Diploma at Distinction/Merit plus GCSE English at grade 4. A proven interest and enthusiasm in any area of art and design.

  • What could the course lead to in higher education or careers?

For any career in art and design it is recommended that you go into higher education to do a specialist degree or foundation degree. You will produce a portfolio of work suitable for your aims, including degree applications.

We offer a one-year Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (University of the Arts London) and a two year HND in graphic design.
