Computing HNC Level 4

The Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Computing offers students a broad introduction to the subject area via a mandatory core of learning, a unit specialism which is pathway dependent and an optional unit of study; allowing for the acquisition of skills and experience across a range of occupational sectors at Level 4.

During this course the following qualifications will be taught with the option of taking the  exams at no extra charge

CompTIA A+ certificate

Microsoft Azure Fundamentals certificate

Course content / assessment methods / Level 4

The following units are Mandatary core units

1: Programming

2: Networking

3: Professional Practice

4: Database Design & Development

5: Security

6: Planning a Computing Project (Pearson-set)

7: Software Development Lifecycles

With the optional unit needed to complete the qualification

8: Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence AI) & Intelligent Systems

 

The course is Semester based with a mixture of blended learning to allow you to complete the qualification in a flexible manner. Semester will last from 1st October to 28th February and from 1st March to the 30th June. The course will be timetabled on Thursday and Fridays (09:00-17:00) which you will be expected to attend in person. There will be 5 days throughout the year where you will be expected to attend either remotely or in person where you will be given one to one support and guidance in order for you to achieve at your full potential. These dates will be negotiated with you at the start of the course. Teaching methods will include one to ones. Lecturers, practical sessions in a laboratory and blended learning. You will be taught in specialist classrooms with access to a range of computing systems and network devices. You will need to dedicate at least 10 hours a week outside the classroom to research and complete assignments

 

Assessments

Each unit is assessed through Assignment work that covers the assessment criteria for that unit. For each assessment criteria you need to submit evidence that you now have that piece of knowledge or skill. Your overall performance across all the assignments in that unit is then judged to see whether you get a Pass, Merit or Distinction for that unit. The grades you get for each unit are then awarded points which when added up match the score of an overall grade for your HNC Computing qualification.

£6000 per year for UK students

£8700 per year for International students

What qualification or experience do I need to start the course?
Formal entry requirements may include:
  • A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Computing or Information Technology
  • An Access to Higher Education Diploma awarded by an approved further Education institution
  • An international equivalent of the above
  • Other related Level 3 qualifications
  • IELTS of at least 6
  • How will I be taught?

    You will be taught in our specialist classroom with access to a range of computer systems and networking devices. You will need to dedicate several hours outside of the classroom to research and completion of assessments.

  • How will I be assessed?

    Assessment is by a series of assignments and practical projects.

  • What qualification will I get?

    The course will include teachings on CompTIA A+ and Microsoft Azure Fundamentals, preparing the students for optional exams to achieve the certificates.

  • What can the course lead to?

    This course leads to HND Computing and after successfully completing the HND you could progress onto the third year of the BSc (Hons) Computing at St Mary’s University as part of our progression agreement. Alternatively, you could top up your qualification to a degree at a range of universities. The point of entry (e.g. second or third year of a degree) will depend on the chosen institution, modules studied and the grades achieved at HND
