Business Level 3

In the 21st Century all organisations need to make sure that the people in them are busy organising resources, producing, selling, marketing, managing their staff and managing their finances. Managers must organise these resources to provide goods and services for customers to be successful.

 

This level 3 qualification helps you develop skills, knowledge and the depth of understanding you need to prepare you for entry into employment, promotion if in a job and to gain entry to higher education.

 

The course is a practical, work-related course and you will cover areas such as promotion of a product, business planning, business online, and human resources management. In fact all the areas of business that need to be understood for businesses to be successful in the modern world.

 

All students (16-18 year olds and 19+) on level 3 vocational and technical programmes will study two qualifications over the duration of their two-year course. For example OCR Level 3 Business students will study the Foundation Diploma in year 1 and the Extended Diploma in year 2. Upon completion of the Level 3 Extended Diploma the Business students will have gained the equivalent of three ‘A’ Levels.

  • What will I study and learn?

    During the course, you will learn more about Business by completing research based investigations, projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands as well as visits to real workplaces.

    YEAR 1

    - The eight first year units will include three examined units and five based on internally assessed coursework. Subjects studied will include:
    - The Business Environment [Externally assessed]
    - Working in Business [Externally assessed]
    - Business Decisions [Externally assessed]
    - 4 Customers and Communication
    - 11 Accounting concepts 60glh internal

    YEAR 2

    - The eight second year units will include three examined units and five based on internally assessed coursework. Subjects studied will include:
    - Marketing and market research
    - Human resources [Externally assessed]
    - Economics for Business [Externally assessed]
    - Change Management [Externally assessed]
    - International business

  • How is the course assessed?

    Ten units are internally assessed first by your class teacher who will then have it internally moderated to agree the final mark for that unit. The remaining six units are externally assessed (examination).

     

    An overall grade for the qualification is awarded to you if you successfully complete all units. Your overall mark will be graded Distinction* to Pass.

  • What skills will I need for the course?

    This course is a practical way of studying business and you will need to have reasonable written and speaking skills to communicate ideas and thoughts effectively within a workplace type of setting as well as an enthusiasm for finding out relevant information.

  • What are my progression options?

    These qualifications are highly valued by employers and can lead to employment opportunities in certain specialisms such as finance, human resources, marketing as well as other business related careers. You may also use it to progress within employment to professional qualifications such as those offered by management accountants (such as CIMA or ACCA), accounting technicians (such as AAT), marketing (such as CIM) or personnel development (CIPD). You can also use it as a stepping-stone on to a degree or HND diploma course at university.

  • Are there any costs involved?

    Additional textbooks will be recommended at a cost of £30 and there will be costs involved in trips to outside organisations. All students should have their own pocket calculator.

  • Are you aged over 19?

    Students aged 19 or over on 31st August directly preceding their academic year may be required to pay tuition fees for that year of study. Advanced Learner Loans may be available for students studying at Level 3. If you are aged 19-23 as at 31 August and this is your first full Level 2 or 3 you may not have to pay fees, provided the qualification meets the legal entitlement at that level – Please enquire for further details.



    Students who are 19-24 years old with Education Health and Care Plans (EHCP) issued by the Local Authority are not required to pay course fees (ie tuition fees are free). Students will be required to provide a final copy of their EHCP provided by the LA as evidence.
