Carpentry Apprentice

carpentry apprenticeship at Pinewood studios and Richmond upon Thames College in London Sam

Passionate teachers

“Richmond upon Thames College have supported me by having very patient and passionate Carpentry teachers. They have a lot of time for me and I feel they want to teach me to become the best carpenter I can be.”

Sam chose an apprenticeship because: “I really wanted to be in a working environment whilst learning. The apprenticeship I’m doing is a fantastic way to learn new skills and methods for completing work. I’m also lucky because I get to work alongside a team with a wide ranging skill set.”

Sam most enjoys: “everything at the moment because every day is so different. I enjoy learning new things from other people and then putting them into practice independently. I find it very satisfying to learn something and then be able to do it myself. I have really enjoyed building film sets and seeing the resemblance more and more every day after working on them over long periods of time.”

Lessons learnt so far: “At college I do bench carpentry so my work in the classroom involves things such as making doors, staircases and window frames. I also do a mixture of bench and site work when working on projects such as building a house. It’s great to have a mixture because I am then picking up various skills as I go.”

Sam’s future plans include: “staying in construction, particularly within the film industry. In the future it would be nice to have developed lots of different carpentry skills and to work my way up to supervising. “
