  • Does the apprentice need a contract of employment?

    Yes, the apprentice is another employee for your business and as such will need a Contract of Employment which outlines their salary, benefits and terms & conditions

  • How much should an apprentice be paid?

    It is entirely up to you how much to pay an apprentice, however you must pay at least the National Minimum Wage for an apprentice which is £3.30 for an apprentice under 19 or any apprentice who is over 19 but in their first year (https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates). Most employers do pay significantly higher than this recommendation particularly in areas of high employment and to ensure they attract the best candidates.

  • Do I have to pay for the apprentice’s training

    For any apprentice under the age of 19 their training is currently fully funded by the Government so there is no fee to the business. Over the age of 19 the Government funds 50% of their training cost so the College charges a fee to cover their costs. The fee varies depending on the course the apprentice is doing and at which level. Our Training Solutions team can provide advice on this.

  • Will I be entitled to the Apprenticeship Grant for Employers of £1,500?

    An employer can apply for up to 5 grants worth £1,500 each to support 5 apprentices in their businesses. The apprentices do not need to all start at the same time.

    The employers which are eligible for the grant are those that:

    • Confirm they are not able to recruit an apprentice without the grant

    • Have fewer than 50 employees in the UK as recorded by the Employer Data Service

    • Not had an employee start on an apprenticeship within the previous 12 months that hasn’t been eligible for the grant

    • Commit to employ your apprentice for the time that it takes them to complete their apprenticeship

    The College applies for the grant on your behalf when each apprentice starts their training and the apprentice needs to still be with your business 13 weeks into their training before the grant is authorised by the Government. It can then take up to another 9 weeks before the College receives the monies which it will then pay over to your business.

  • How often will the apprentice come to college?

    It depends on the programme the apprentice is doing and on their prior qualifications. Our Training Solutions team will advise you on the programme you are interested in.
