Last week Daniel Galbraith, IT Apprentice at RuTC successfully won 4th place at the Cyber Security Challenge 2016, a competition which aims to inspire future cyber security professionals.

Eighteen RuTC politics students recently attended a conference for 6th form and college students in Richmond, titled ‘Your Right to Vote’. It was organized by Achieving for Children’s Youth Participation Team and took place at Heatham House Youth Centre, where students were provided with refreshments at lunchtime. The day included a speech from Andree Freeze, local Green Party candidate.

Richmond upon Thames College (RuTC) has successfully secured a number of grants throughout different subject areas, namely Sports, Supported Learning and Graphics. RuTC recently reported on the success of a £3,500 funding grant for the art department’s purchase of Google’s new virtual ‘Tilt’ paintbrush and are pleased to be creating more opportunities for students through further funding.

Richmond upon Thames College has successfully secured a grant of £3500 for their art department to turn their hands to a new digital way of drawing, painting and designing. Back in July 2016, Alice Swinhoe, Art Lecturer at Richmond upon Thames College, began to investigate Google’s new virtual paintbrush; an innovative virtual reality ‘Tilt Brush’ tool which enables artists to paint the life-sized 3D space around them. The tool is supported by HTC's ‘Vive’ headset and hand controller, which allows artists to create brush strokes using a virtual paint pallet.

Tschan Andrews, former student at Richmond upon Thames College (RuTC), has recently been featured on a Channel 4 Series titled ‘Born Risky’, where she was interviewed by artist, Grayson Perry. During the episode, Tschan spoke openly about the challenges faced as a black transgender model in an industry renowned for lack of diversity. Tschan is often featured in the media for her career success and has been described by Dazed as a ‘true revolutionary’ for her trans-activism which is often ‘fought under the radar’.

On Tuesday 15th November Richmond upon Thames College (RuTC) hosted an AIG wheelchair rugby event for players from the New Zealand Maori All Blacks rugby team and athletes from H4H Sports Recovery. The session started with a warm-up for the H4H Wheelchair Rugby Team which included Bronze Medallists from the 2016 Invictus Games, a team of wounded, injured and sick veterans. Later, the players were joined by four Maori All Blacks Ambrose Curtis, Marty McKenzie, Matt Proctor and Reed Prinsep. Together, the two teams shared skills and techniques whilst tasked with various wheelchair rugby drills.

Richmond upon Thames College is launching an entrepreneurship programme for aspiring student entrepreneurs. A student-led start-up company is being formed to create and sell products in line with developing the college’s enterprise brand titled ‘RICH’.

Students who are successfully chosen to form part of the founding ‘RICH Entrepreneurs’ team will have access to mentors and industry experts to help turn ideas into real market products. Students can apply for any of the following seven roles: Managing Director, Research and Product Manager, Marketing and Web Manager, Sales Manager, Sponsorship Manager, Project Manager and Finance Manager.

Richmond upon Thames College (RuTC) hosted a coding event for over 20 children between the ages of 7 – 11 on Thursday 27th October. The event was launched in association with CoderDojo, a worldwide movement of free, volunteer-led, community-based programming clubs for young people. The session hosted by RuTC focused on coding games including robotics, Ardunio, Kudo and Scratch. Attendees also had the opportunity to learn how to code, build a website and create an app or a game. 

On Friday 4th November the Richmond Business Awards 2016 saw business leaders, owners and influencers joining forces to celebrate local business excellence. The black tie gala event at RFU Twickenham Stadium was co-hosted by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and the Richmond and Twickenham Times.
