RuTC Student’s Sculpture Design is Chosen for Local Dementia Friendly Park

Friday 12 May 2017

On Thursday 11th May, students studying Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design at Richmond upon Thames College (RuTC) visited Heathfield Recreation Ground in Richmond alongside Councillor David Linnette, Mayor of Richmond upon Thames.

The visit came as part of an ongoing project where students were asked to design a sculpture that could act as a focal point for residents with dementia who are visiting the park.

Ten designs were shortlisted after a judgingRuTC Judging Panel for Dementia Friendly Park Sculpture panel visited the college in February which included college teachers and London Borough of Richmond upon Thames Councillors. The winning design of a giant arm chair that symbolises peace and home came from student Aleksandra Piechocinka and is currently being developed ready for installation this summer.

Robin Ghurbhurun, Principal and Chief Executive of Richmond upon Thames College, commented "Our Art and Design students have worked incredibly hard on their designs for a new ‘dementia friendly’ installation and it has been a great opportunity for them to contribute to such an important project. We are looking forward to seeing the positive impact the new sculpture will have on our local community and all future visitors to the park.”

The new sculpture along with other additional features will make Heathfield Recreation Ground the borough’s second dementia friendly park.
