This two-year qualification (which is equivalent to three A-levels) allows learners to explore the various contexts in which they can work as a personal trainer, in industries such as leisure, tourism, healthcare and public services. Upon completion of the course, learners are equipped with the qualifications necessary to progress directly into employment or to a Higher Education undergraduate degree pathway.

The course provides learners with a Fitness Instructing qualification after year one and a Personal Training qualification the end of year two (both CIMPSA recognised). Units include: Personal Trainer Skills Development, Self-employment in Sport and Physical Activity, Functional Sports Massage, Sporting Injuries, Fitness Training and Marketing Communications.
All students (16-18 year olds and 19+) on level 3 vocational and technical programmes will study two qualifications over the duration of their two-year course. An example of this is BTEC students will study for a 90 credit qualification in the 1st year. Upon successful completion, they will be able to progress to the 2nd year and study a diploma/extended diploma qualification.

Each unit consists of between 2-4 assignments which have to be completed throughout the course. Evidence for your portfolio is gathered from written assignments, video evidence of practical ability, investigation work, practical experiments, role play and work experience.
For example, in Functional Sports Massage, you will be asked to examine different sporting injuries, design a rehabilitation programme, and demonstrate practical massage techniques that would be beneficial to the performer when returning to sport.
In addition to this, observing and leading sessions will be assessed to meet professional standards in preparation for employment.
You will need to have an interest in both Health and Fitness along with good English and Mathematical skills. You must also possess good organisational and communication skills, a proven record of good attendance and punctuality, and participate regularly in sport or physical activity.
Minimum requirements - 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C/9-4 including English and Maths at grade 4
OR
Level 2 Diploma at Distinction/Merit plus GCSE English, Maths and Science at grade 4.
This qualification has been developed in consultation with employers and professional bodies so that its content is relevant to and consistent with current industry practice and allows learners to enter employment directly in the Health and Fitness sector.
Upon successful completion of this 2-year study programme, learners will be eligible to enter the workplace as a CIMPSA registered Personal Trainer. Higher-education institutions have also been consulted to ensure that the qualification allows appropriate progression for those aspiring to go on to higher-level study.

Students aged 19 or over on 31st August directly preceding their academic year may be required to pay tuition fees for that year of study. Advanced Learner Loans may be available for students studying at Level 3. If you are aged 19-23 as at 31 August and this is your first full Level 2 or 3 you may not have to pay fees, provided the qualification meets the legal entitlement at that level – Please enquire for further details.
Students who are 19-24 years old with Education Health and Care Plans (EHCP) issued by the Local Authority are not required to pay course fees (ie tuition fees are free). Students will be required to provide a final copy of their EHCP provided by the LA as evidence.
