Sport and Active Leisure BTEC Level 1

Sport and Active Leisure is and idea course for students who would like to find out more about the fast growing sport and leisure industry.


If you are planning to work in this sector then there is plenty of choice, eg operation and management of sports facilities; health and fitness gyms; sports development plan a leisure event and coach a particular sport.


You will be required to complete coursework on a range of topics including devising your own fitness and exercise programme, how the body works and physical activities for children. Successful completion of this course can lead on to the Level 2 Diploma in Sport.

  • What will I study and learn?

    Over the year you will be studying eleven vocational units:

    • Taking part in sport
    • Physical activities for children
    • Assisting a leader of sport or leisure activities to plan and deliver an activity
    • Working in a team
    • Taking part in exercise and fitness activities
    • How the body works
    • Planning own fitness programme
    • Working in sport and active leisure
    • Job opportunities in sport and active leisure
    • Preparing for work placement
    • Learning from work placement

    You will be working individually and as part of a group. Lectures are normally classroom based. Sports-based work placements are a feature of this programme.

    You will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports activities at the college in your free time.

  • How is the course assessed?

    The technical units will be assessed through booklets which will be completed during the year. Assessment is 100% coursework.

    Coursework tasks are varied. You will learn how to plan and take part in team activities such as sports competitions, investigate leisure provision in the local area, practise delivering customer service and find out about jobs in sport and leisure.

  • What skills will I need for the course?

    You must be able to show that you can benefit from following a level 1 course in sport and leisure. You will be expected to discuss your interests and achievements at the interview.

  • What formal entry requirements will I need?

    No formal qualifications are required. You will need an assessment and interview and must be motivated, committed and have a positive attitude. The course is designed for school leavers who are able to work at a level equivalent to GCSE grades 4-2/D-F.

  • What are my progression options?

    Many of our students progress on to the Level 2 Diploma in sport, provided they have gained a pass in all the units at level 1 and have demonstrated competency in the functional skills along with a positive tutor reference. Other students go straight into training or take up employment in the leisure and sport industry at a junior level in sports clubs and leisure centres.

  • Are there any costs involved?

    No, but there may be additional costs for occasional trips.
