Personal Training Certificate Level 3

The aim of this qualification is to provide you with the skills, knowledge and competence required to work unsupervised as a personal trainer. This includes being able to offer one-to-one training, baseline assessment, nutritional advice and progressive programming which is specific to the individual needs of a client.

  • What is the course about and how might it benefit me?

    You will gain an understanding in anatomy and physiology, how to maintain health, safety and welfare in a variety of fitness environments, including the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults. You will also be given the guidance on how to programme safe and effective exercise for a range of clients, the health benefits of physical activity and the importance of healthy eating.

    As a learner on this course you will confidently be able to design, manage, and adapt a personal training programme with healthy adults of all ages, including how to deliver exercise and physical activity as part of a programme.

    You are required to purchase three manuals essential for the duration of the course; Anatomy and Physiology Manual, Award in Nutrition for Physical Activity Manual and Certificate in Personal Training Manual,. These manuals contain all the information required to achieve this qualification and will be referred to consistently throughout the course. It is also a requirement to ensure you have practical kit as you will be required to take part in physical activity.

  • What qualification or experience do I need to start the course?

    You are required to hold a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing. It is recommended that you are a current gym user and have a keen interest in motivating others to maintain their health and fitness.

    Ideally you will be working in a gym environment to ensure you gain as much experience as possible to aid your understanding and confidence in instructing physical activity.

  • How will I be taught?

    The course involves a mixture of classroom-based activities and practical activities in a gym environment. It is essential that you are able to take part in both the theory and practical elements of the course. You are also expected to complete some pre-reading (your tutor will guide you on this on successful enrolment on the course) from your manual prior to the start of the course.

    Further reading outside of the classroom is always recommended to any learner. In regards to the practical element, you will be expected to practice in your own time to build your confidence and perfect your technique.

  • How will I be assessed?

    Your progress will be assessed regularly throughout the duration of the course. Your tutor will provide formative feedback when necessary to help with your understanding.

    You are required to complete and fully achieve mandatory worksheets included in your LAP:

    • Health, Safety and Welfare in a Fitness Environment
    • Know How to Support Clients Who Take Part in Exercise and Physical Activity

    You are required to take two multiple choice theory assessment exams, achieving a minimum of 70%, on the following:

    • Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise
    • Principles of Exercise Fitness and Health

    You will also be required to apply the principles of nutrition as part of a training programme and deliver personal training to clients. You will be assessed on the completion of worksheets and practical delivery.

  • What qualification will I get?

    If successful you will achieve an Active IQ Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training. This qualification provides access onto the Register of Exercise Professionals (Reps) at Level 3.

  • What can the course lead to?

    Upon successful completion and achievement of this qualification you will be able to work as a personal trainer either within a health and fitness club setting and/or self-employed. As a progression route you may consider broadening your expertise by taking more specialist training such as working with older people, disabled people or pregnant women.
