Music Technology A level

Our Music Technology A Level is aimed at students with a passion and talent for music. Richmond upon Thames College is located in Twickenham, London, and is on the doorstep to a whole world of music opportunities. RuTC has produced some famous musicians including Dave (the rapper), who studied A Level Music, and some parents may remember rock band Kula Shaker, who met at RuTC in 1988. Our students go on to accomplish great things, whether in the public eye or behind the scenes in the music industry and our aim is to help you to get to where you want to be.

Edexcel’s A Level GCE in Music Technology is a course for students who would like to pursue a career in music production. The Music Technology course is broken up into 4 units that cover the full spectrum of basic skills needed to progress to a higher level of study or to work in one of the many areas of music production.

This is a practical course in which you will learn how to use industry recording studio and Logic music software for mixing, sequencing, arranging and composing. You will use industry standard software used by musicians or composers to make or perform music; play back or record songs or pieces; or to analyse or edit music.

This course covers: Studio Recording; Technology-based composition; Listening and Analysing; and Production Techniques. You do not need to have previous experience of Music Technology and there is no Music Theory or Live Performance involved. You do need to be enthusiastic to learn about, and apply, sound recording, sound design, and music production techniques in our industry-standard studios. Fits particularly well with Media and Science courses.

Music Facilities

The Music Department has industry-standard facilities, including Logic, Ableton, Native Instruments and Waves software. We have superbly equipped rehearsal rooms and mixdown/programming suites, as well as a state-of the-art main recording studio. You can take a look at our college facilities, including our music studios, by clicking here. You can also have a look at our 360 Virtual Tour, where you can take yourself on a virtual tour of our brand new music studios.

A level students will study a two year linear A Level programme. At the end of their 1st year, students will sit internally assessed exams.
