Access to HE Diploma Medicine

The Access to HE Diploma (Medicine and Medical Biosciences) offers adults returnering to education with a coherent, integrated and supported year of study. Through which they will gain the knowledge, awareness, skills and confidence necessary for successful undergraduate studying in the intended progression routes for this Diploma.


The course aims to provide a balance of essential study skills with specialist subject knowledge to enable the students to be prepared for the academic and practical rigours of undergraduate study in Medicine and Medical Biosciences.


Access to Higher Education programmes are designed for students who are aged 19 and over as of 31 August. However, if you are 18 on the 31 August please contact us by clicking the enquire button below so that we can discuss your options.

  • What will I study and learn?

    This is an exciting Access Diploma which will help you go where you want to go in the Medical world. Extensive work experience in a Medical related field is also advised.

    There are three mandatory units which include:

    • Finding and Reading Information (Ungraded)
    • Algebra (Graded)
    • Report Writing (Ungraded)

    You will also have to study 3 further Study Skills units which include:

    • Reading and Comprehension of Scientific Writing
    • Using Information Technology
    • Examination Skills: Preparing for and Succeeding in an Examination

    You will then study a range of Scientific units such as:

    • Biology units e.g Human Tissues and Systems and Genes and Inheritance
    • Chemistry units e.g Chemical Energetics and Biological Chemistry
    • Physics units e.g Medical Imaging and Atomic Physics
  • How is the course assessed?

    The following assessment methods could be used to assess the units within this Diploma. These could include a number of the following, but at least part of one graded subject specific unit must include a formal examination taken under timed conditions.

    • Artefacts
    • Case studies
    • Oral presentation
    • Practical tasks/demonstrations
    • Question and answer (written and oral)
    • Tests/exams with seen or unseen papers
    • Tutor observation
    • Worksheets
    • Written assignments
    • Written essays/reports

    In order the gain the Access to HE Diploma, learners must achieve a total of 60 credits. Of these 60 credits, 45 credits must be achieved at Level 3 from graded subject specific units. Graded units can be awarded at Pass, Merit or Distinction. The remaining 15 credits must be achieved at Level 2 or Level 3 from study skills units which are ungraded.

  • What formal entry requirements do I need?

    Minimum Requirements - 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C/9-4 including English or Maths.

    However, you do not necessarily need previous qualifications, as we will take your life experience into account. Applicants for this course will be expected to have some business knowledge. Please note that this is a very demanding course, equivalent to an A level programme, so ideally you will have a good level of literacy and numeracy (GCSE grade A-C standard) in order to succeed.

    You will have an initial assessment to assess your suitability for the course. If successful, you will be invited for an interview. If you are not quite ready, we may offer you another course that will prepare you for the Access course.

    In order to progress to certain higher education courses, you may require GCSE English and/or GCSE Maths to satisfy your university entry requirements.
