HND Performing Arts L5 FT

The HNC/D in Performing Arts (Drama and Theatre Practices) is aimed at developing students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the Performing Arts.

The course will enable you to adapt to a constantly changing world, equipping students with performing arts skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to achieve high performance in the global Performing Arts environment.

The HNC is a one year full time course. On completion of the HNC, you may get the opportunity to progress to the HND, which is also a one year full time course.

  • Costs - tuition fees, loans and classroom costs

    The tuition fee is £4,600 per annum (excluding Exam fees and course fees). 

    Examination registration fees are as follows:

    HNC: £224.20
    HND: £271.00

    There will also be £200 materials fee, which will include theatre trips, workshops from experienced external practitioners, costumes, props and sets. Please note this fee is subject to change.

  • What you will study

    Building on your previous experiences of Performing Arts, you will gain an in-depth understanding of contemporary dramatic practices and theories. You will also explore the histories and contexts that shape the Theatre we see today.

    On the course, you will be given the chance to watch and discuss theatre, read, explore, and stage plays, and write, devise, and perform your own work.

  • How you will be taught

    The course is taught mainly through studio-based projects. You will also work on group projects, which will prepare you for the demands of a professional working environment. Live briefs are an important aspect of this course and we will encourage you to apply for an internship or other work experience.

    You will become increasingly independent in preparation for the HND, where you will be encouraged to initiate and develop your own projects, from personal research and interests.

    We work on live projects, engage in group work (no more than 1:15, with frequent 1:1 access and a dedicated tutor).

    We have visiting artists and practitioners plus off-site visits to Theatres, galleries, museums, and other unique performance spaces.

  • How the course is assessed

    The format of assessment is an assignment taken after the content of the unit has been fully delivered.

    It may take a variety of forms, including practical and written types. This may include essays, portfolio evidence, reflective accounts and collaborative projects and productions.

    We recommend that you spend at least ten hours per week studying outside class time.

  • Skills and experience you will need for the course

    Previous perfomance experience would benefit you greatly.

  • Entry requirements

    To study this course, you must be 18 years or over, and possess one of the following:

    •  A BTEC level 3 qualification in Performing Arts
    •  An A level profile, that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject
    •  A foundation diploma in Performing Arts

    Plus at least five GCSEs grades A-C, including English.

    Mature learners are welcome and may have a more varied profile of achievement which might include relevant work experience and/or professional qualifications.

    Interview

    Once you have applied, we would normally invite you to the College to take part in an audition as part of your interview to showcase your creativity and interests for the Performing Arts industry. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 and following government guidelines, this is not currently possible. Instead we would like you to complete a video recording of yourself performing an appropriate monologue of your choice. You will receive further information once you have submitted your application.

  • Progression options

    After completing the one year HNC you can progress to the one year HND, which is a level 5 technical qualification. Students can study the HND to prepare for a BA (Hons) degree or to sharpen existing performance skills.

    Progression from the HND Performing Arts may be into a career within the industry –theatre, acting, play writing, directing and production or into further Higher Education study at university.
