Performing Arts (Dance) Level 3 Extended Diploma

Thank you for your interest in studying Dance at RuTC this September

Dance transforms images, ideas and feelings into sequences of movement. It allows people to discover, explore and develop their movement vocabulary and create dynamic movement material.

Exam Board: University of the Arts London (UAL)

STARTS IN SEPTEMBER

All students (16-18 year olds and 19+) on level 3 vocational and academic programmes will study two qualifications over the duration of their two-year course.

An example of this is BTEC students will study for a 90 credit qualification in the 1st year. Upon successful completion, they will be able to progress to the 2nd year and study a diploma/extended diploma qualification.

A level students will study AS Level in their first year and upon successful achievement will progress through to the full A Level in their second year.

UK and EU students aged 19 or over on 31st August directly preceding their academic year will normally be required to pay tuition fees for that year of study. Advanced Learner Loans may be available for students studying at Level 3.

Course fees (for learners aged 19+) may be charged as follows:

A Level programme (2 year course)
1 x A Level = £850 per annum
2 x A Levels = £1,700 per annum
3 x A Levels = £2,550 per annum

Plus registration/exam fees = £120 per A Level

Vocational programme (eg BTEC / CACHE / UAL)
90 credit qualification (year 1) = £2,550
Diploma/extended diploma qualification (year 2) = £2,550

Students who are 19+ years old with Education Health and Care Plans (EHCP) issued by the Local Authority are not required to pay course fees (ie tuition fees are free). Students will be required to provide a final copy of their EHCP provided by the LA as evidence.

We pride ourselves on offering a diverse student experience.

This is a two-year practical based course that focuses on technique, performance and choreography. It aims to prepare you with the skills needed to progress to university or dance school in a range of dance disciplines. You will study the following styles of dance:

    • Ballet
    • Jazz
    • Musical Theatre
    • Contemporary
    • Urban
    • Tap

You will have the opportunity to perform in at least three productions over the two years and participate in the Ignite Dance Platform.

As part of the course you will also study business, historical context, dance fitness and anatomy.

  • How is the course assessed?

This course consists of 12 units over two years. These are continually assessed through regular assignments and practical projects. Assignments may range from assessed rehearsals or performances to project based written work. To progress to the second year students must successfully complete all first year units.

The extended diploma attracts the same UCAS points as three AS/A2 Levels.

  • What courses would combine well with this course?

You will be offered the opportunity to take an AS/A2 subject alongside your extended diploma performing arts (dance) providing you have sufficient GCSE points. Subjects which are popular with dance students include theatre studies, English, photography and business. There are many other AS/A2 courses offered at the college. You can discuss any additional subject you would like to study during the interview stage.

  • What skills will I need for the course?

Previous experience of dance is required, however, formal training is not essential. Your skills will be assessed at the audition, so if you have drive and passion and a desire to develop your dance technique then we want to hear from you!

  • What formal entry requirements will I need?

    You will need:

5 GCSEs at grade A*-C , including English and dance at grade C

    OR

a Level 2 diploma at distinction/merit plus English GCSE at grade C

  • What could the course lead to in higher education or careers?

The extended diploma performing arts (dance) is a nationally recognised qualification and is designed to prepare you for a career in the performing arts industry. It offers progression to university or dance school. The course also provides you with a background for arts administration or community based project roles.

Some of the dance schools and universities that past RuTC students have progressed to include:

    • Bird College
    • LIPA
    • London Studio Centre
    • Northern School of Contemporary Dance
