Start date: SEPTEMBER

  • What will I study and learn?

The course is made up of 13 units - 8 in year one and 5 in year two. All units are focused on developing your knowledge and skills within 3D as well as using industry standard compositing software. Every unit will involve drawing as well as photography as these are seen as key skills by the visual effects industry. The units will enable you to study particular areas in depth and, at the end of each year, a production project will give you the opportunity to investigate and display your knowledge of 3D animation, as well as to create visual effects sequences to industry-led briefs.

  • How is the course assessed?

The courses consist of 18 units over two years. These are continually assessed through regular assignments and practical projects that will take the form of simulated work situations aimed at developing and testing your ability to solve problems, on your own and also by working in a team. You will also be required to carry out research work and give presentations. To progress to the second year, students must successfully complete all year 1 units.

  • What skills will I need for the course?

You will need to have a good eye for design and be interested in the technical side of interactive media.

  • What formal entry requirements will I need?

    You will need:

5 GCSEs (at grades A*-C) including English and maths at grade C and one of the following GCSEs  art and design, graphic design, textiles or design technology at grade C

    OR

a level 2 diploma at distinction/merit plus GCSE English and maths at grade C.

In addition, as the field of animation and visual effects is primarily visual, you must submit a portfolio of art and design work at your interview.

  • What could the course lead to in higher education or careers?

If you wish to get a job straight from college you might work in the film visual effects industry, animation, graphic or 3D design. If you decide to go to university you could take a degree or HND in a variety of media related courses.

  • Are there any costs involved?

We ask for a studio fee which covers a substantial amount of materials in media production including video cassettes for editing, disks and mini disks, texts and some visits. This is currently £110 per year and should be paid at the beginning of the course. We would expect you to own a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera.

There will also be some visits when students will be expected to pay their train fares and occasional optional trips abroad.
