BTEC Introductory Award in Applied Science



The Applied Science BTEC Level 2 provides an exciting approach to the study of science. It offers you the opportunity to develop skills that are needed to start a career in a related field of science; such as a laboratory, industrial or medical technician. You can also progress to the Applied Science BTEC Level 3.

 

The course includes a fusion of practical and theoretical topics from biology, chemistry and physics, providing you with enough depth to be successful in any pathway you choose. Our laboratories are well equipped to enable you to achieve your goal.

  • What will I study and learn?

    You will complete 8 mandatory units of work through a combination of practical experiments in the labs and theoretical investigations. Your work will be project based and will cover a series of topics including;

    • Principles of science
    • Chemistry and our earth
    • Energy and our universe
    • Applications of chemical substances
    • Physical science
    • Health applications of science

    You will also complete 8 optional units which focus on a particular area in science and may include the following topics;

    • The living body
    • Growing plants for food
    • Science in medicine
    • Understanding human behaviour
    • Designing and making useful devices in science
    • Exploring our universe
    • Electronics in action
    • Investigating a crime scene
  • How is the course assessed?

    Assessment is a mixture of coursework assignments which are internally assessed and 2 externally assessed units.

  • What formal entry requirements will I need?

    Minimum Requirements - 4 GCSEs including English, Maths and Double Science at grade 3.

  • What could the course lead to in higher education or careers?

    Successful students generally progress onto a Level 3 Applied Science (Biomedical or Physical) course. If you do well at this advanced level it is possible to progress to a degree at university or perhaps an HND at a higher education or further education college.

  • Are there any costs involved?

    You will be attending trips and visits throughout the year, an essential part of your coursework, and this will cost you approximately £40 across the year.
