Health and Social Care Level 3

• What will I study and learn?

  You will study a number of mandatory units to develop the skills required within the health and social care sector as well as optional units that focus on specialist areas of work within health and social care. You will also undertake a work placement in a relevant setting during your period of study.

  • Equality, diversity and rights in health and social care
  • Health, safety and security in health and social care
  • Development through the life stages
  • Anatomy and physiology for health and social care
  • Personal and professional development in health and social care
  • Sociological perspectives for health and social care
  • Psychological perspectives for health and social care

• How is the course assessed?

  There are 2 externally marked exams in year 1 and 1 externally marked exam in year 2. In addition, coursework is continually assessed through assignments. These may be written projects, presentations or discussions. You will also be required to complete a meaningful work placement to support your assessed work.

• What skills will I need for the course?

  You will need to:

  • have good writing and analytical skills
  • like working with people of all ages
  • have good time management
  • be an independent learner

  You should be prepared to complete a practical placement.

  This course will appeal to those students who:

  • want to study a course that is active and enjoyable and have a keen interest in health and social care
  • enjoy studying a subject that is relevant to their own lives and experience
  • want the opportunity to carry out practical work outdoors as well as class work
  • enjoy discovering about themselves in practical situations

• What formal entry requirements will I need?

  Minimum requirements - 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C/9-4 including English and Maths and a subject relevant to your chosen area of study at grade 4

  OR

  Level 2 Diploma at Distinction/Merit plus GCSE English and Maths at grade 4.

• What could the course lead to in higher education or careers?

  You will learn, develop and use a variety of transferable skills throughout the course. These include collecting, analysing and interpreting data, communicating your findings in different ways as well as identifying and developing the links between different parts of the subject. These skills are in great demand and are recognised by employers and universities as being of great value.

  Some students go straight into employment which can include further training in such areas as care support work, health work or advice and assistance work within the sector. You can also go on to higher education to study nursing, midwifery, social work, therapy or related areas of study at university or other institutions.

• Are there any costs involved?

  You will have to pay £50 for a DBS and additional finance will be required for student materials and a text books plus visit costs and travel required for placements.

• Are you aged over 19?

  Students aged 19 or over on 31st August directly preceding their academic year may be required to pay tuition fees for that year of study. Advanced Learner Loans may be available for students studying at Level 3. If you are aged 19-23 as at 31 August and this is your first full Level 3 you may not have to pay fees.

  
  

  Students who are 19-24 years old with Education Health and Care Plans (EHCP) issued by the Local Authority are not required to pay course fees (ie tuition fees are free). Students will be required to provide a final copy of their EHCP provided by the LA as evidence.
