Health and Social Care Level 2

• What will I study and learn?

  You will study a number of mandatory units to develop the skills required within the health and social care sector as well as optional units that focus on specialist areas of work within health and social care. You will also undertake a work placement in a relevant setting during your period of study.

• How is the course assessed?

  The course is assessed continuously through assignments. These may be written projects, presentations or discussions but will also include practical assessments on your work placement.

• What skills will I need for the course?

  You will need to:

  • have good writing and analytical skills
  • like working with people of all ages
  • have good time management
  • be an independent learner

  You should be prepared to complete a practical placement.

  This course will appeal to those students who:

  • Are interested in a career in the NHS and social sector
  • Want the opportunity to discover and develop the skills necessary to help and care for others
  • Enjoy studying a subject that is relevant to their own lives and experiences.

• What formal entry requirements will I need?

  Minimum requirements - 4 GCSEs at grade D/3 including English and Maths at grade 3.

• What could the course lead to in higher education or careers?

  Because the course combines theory with practical activities and work experience, it is possible to gain employment in the care sector while you complete it. You may be able to do an QCF Level 2 or 3 whilst you are employed.

  If you would prefer to continue your education you may be able to progress to the Level 3 qualification in health and social care provided you have the required entry points. This could lead on to higher education. Alternatively, you might progress onto one of the childcare courses which in turn lead to employment working with children. You will also be required to have passed Maths and English GCSE at grade C/3 or achieve passes at Level 2 functional skills in communications and application of number.

• Are there any costs involved?

  You will need 1 textbook at a cost of approximately £20. You will need a DBS, to determine your suitability as a 'fit' person to work with children and vulnerable people, which is currently £70. You will have to pay travel costs to your work placement and for any visits that are connected to the course.
