GCSE Science Pathway

• What will I study and learn?

  Students study retakes in GCSE English and Maths, alongside GCSE courses in combined science and psychology Overall on the programme, you will learn to develop your skills of analysis, spoken and written expression and build up your confidence with sessions on exam technique and progression routes at the College following your retakes.

  
  
  Studying GCSE combined science involves studying biology, chemistry and physics and is the equivalent to two GCSEs. This course will prepare you for going on to A level science or other level 3 science courses such as forensic science level 3. You will cover a wide variety of topics including cell biology, genetics, states of matter, the periodic table, energy & forces and electromagnetism. You will have both practical and theory lessons.

  
  
  Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and the way that individuals behave. This course introduces students to the fundamentals of psychology, developing critical analysis, independent thinking and research skills. You will cover topics such as memory and perception, language and communication and psychological problems.

• How is the course assessed?

  All GCSEs will have end of year exams.

• What courses would combine well with this course?

  The five GCSEs form a full time programme, however, individual combinations can be tailored for learners depending on their needs from additional level 2 or level 3 qualifications.

• What formal entry requirments will I need?

  You will need Maths and English GCSE grades at 3 to be able to retake these intensively. If you do not have Maths and English at grade 3 then you will need to take a diagnostic assessment to ensure your current working level is at GCSE standard.
  
  Ideally, you will have further GCSE grades at 3 or 4 to indicate academic potential (this will be considered on a case by case basis).
  
  You will need to show evidence of why you have the potential to study at level 3 and should be considered for this restart programme.

• What could the course lead to?

  Successful students who are able to achieve grades of 4 and higher on the pathway will be able to apply for level 3 courses within either A level or Vocational department for the following year.

• Are there any costs involved?

  You will need to purchase text books and resources for each of your GCSE subjects, approximately £20 per course.
