ESOL: Adults

From September 2023 Richmond Upon Thames College are offering a new ESOL (English for Speakers of other Languages) programme for adults (age 19+).

The course is for adults who do not speak English as their first language and have moved to the UK to live and work here. The programme runs for an academic year. On the course you will study English (ESOL) plus additional subjects depending on your level of English. These include maths, employment skills (work) and life in the UK.

English is the main part of the course and learners will be given tuition in speaking and listening skills, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary based on the ESOL Skills for Life Core Curriculum. This will be delivered in the context of everyday UK life and work so you can successfully seek work, progress to further study and play your part in the community.

Level: Pre-entry to level 2

Qualifications: You will complete qualifications in the following:

  • ESOL Skills for Life reading, speaking and listening, writing
  • Functional Skills maths or Award in Maths Skills

Additional Qualifications to include:

  • Award in Living and Working in the UK
  • Preparation for Employment

Entry requirements: No qualifications required but you must complete an English language assessment to check your starting level

  • Course fee information

    Please note that for most students the course is free. If you meet the criteria for co-funding, then you may be entitled to pay a reduced amount. Co-funded courses are courses that are paid for entirely or in part by the government.

    The total co-funded amount for this course is: £225

  • What qualification or experience do I need to start the course?

    These courses are for EU residents, refugees or asylum seekers whose first language is not English. We will assess your level of English before you enrol on the course. You must demonstrate at interview that you are able to commit to the programme of study, attend 100% of all classes, and complete set work to deadlines.

  • How will I be taught?

    You will learn in a friendly environment, either at college or in local community centres through the use of group activities, discussions, games and projects. We will do everything we can to support and guide you to reach your goals.

  • How will I be assessed?

    There will be regular assessment throughout the course leading to speaking and listening exams at the end of each term.

  • What qualification will I get?

    Ascentis ESOL Skills for Life Certificates in Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening

  • What can the course lead to?

    - Higher level of ESOL
    - GCSE
