Introduction to Welding Level 1 (intensive)

This course aims to provide basic practical training, as well as an understanding and knowledge of, fabrication and welding, ie the various processes by which metals are fused with metals.

The aim of the course is to introduce you to basic welding and fabrication applications and techniques in a number of different processes. This is a practical course, with the emphasis on 'learning by doing'.

  • What qualification or experience do I need to start the course?

    There are no formal entry requirements for this course, and no previous welding experience is necessary. All you need is a positive interest, and a commitment to working within an engineering environment.

    To comply with Safety Regulations, students are required to provide their own overalls (fire retardant) and footwear (steel toe capped boots).

  • How will I be taught?

    There will be lectures, but all of the above applications and techniques are taught as practical lessons (apart from Health & Safety), and each includes demonstrations of everything taught. This is essentially a practical 'hands-on' lesson course. There is no formal homework.

    You will have constant contact with your tutor throughout the length of the course and there will be an opportunity to evaluate your course at the end.

  • How will I be assessed?

    The teacher will record your progress and provide informal, regular feedback throughout the course. At the end of your study programme you will be asked to self-assess your own progress and achievement against the expected achievements.

    In each welding application, welded joints will be produced and by the end of the course you should have produced an array of different welded joints from the four welding processes covered. At the end of the course, joints from each welding process will be tested for defects as a practical coursework assessment. The tests that are carried out are described below:

    • Dye-penetrant test
      This test uses a red dye and chalk emulsion sprayed on to the surface of the welded joint. This type of testing method indicates any racks or the lack of parent material fusion on the surface of the welded joint area.
    • Nital test
      With this method of testing, the student cuts the welded joint in half and then polishes the face of the weld to a shiny finish. The student then adds the nital solution to the shiny face of the welded joint. This type of testing method shows how much the welding process has penetrated in to the parent material, also showing up any slag entrapments.
    • Destructive test
      A section of the welded joint to be tested (20mm wide) is placed under a hydraulic press. A pressure is applied to the welded area and the welded material is then bent under pressure. If the welded joint cracks or brakes under pressure the welded joint has failed. This type of method is used to test for weld penetration, strength of weld and fusion of parent material.
  • What qualification will I get?

    You will gain a Level 1 Richmond upon Thames College Certificate, and be able to move on to the Level 2 Welding Skills course.
