This is a unit based qualification with assessment points throughout the year. The Diploma is the first component of a full Extended Diploma which is completed over 2 years.
Through a variety of workshops, projects and formal lessons you will gain a wide range of technical skills and knowledge. Subjects include; pre-production and research methods, visual production and technology, professional practice and entrepreneurial skills. Visits to media industries and events are incorporated into the course.
Creative Media Production (TV, Film and Journalism) Level 3
The UAL Creative Media Production (TV, Film and Journalism) Level 3 course, is designed for students interested in a “behind the camera” media career in film, TV and digital narrative.
There is a combination of both the creative the use image and technical production skills. You will be involved in practical filming projects using digital equipment for filming and post production.
Media is a fast moving industry and current topics are explored, you will use research and context to develop you own ideas and concepts. Due to the strong reputation of the course, Richmond upon Thames students are invited to participate in competitions and other experience opportunities.
All students (16-18 year olds and 19+) on level 3 vocational and technical programmes will study two qualifications over the duration of their two-year course. An example of this is BTEC students will study for a 90 credit qualification in the 1st year. Upon successful completion, they will be able to progress to the 2nd year and study a diploma/extended diploma qualification.

How is the course assessed?
The UAL course consists of a total of 13 units. You will be given assignments that are continually assessed throughout the course. In year 1 you will study 8 units. Units 1-7 will allow you to experiment and develop your skills across a wide range of topics. You will work both independently and in teams on different assignments. You will develop research and pre-production skills, career planning, camera work, editing and production. Unit 8 is the Final Major Project and will allow you to produce a self-directed project. This final project will be assessed and graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction and will be your final grade for year 1.
Year 2 units 9-13 will allow you to develop your skills further and in greater depth. You will be able to explore your chosen area of specialism and to develop as an independent professional learner. Unit 13 will be a self-directed project based on your chosen specialism and will allow you to explore your own individual expression and creativity. This unit will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and will be your final grade for the qualification.

What skills will I need for the course?
You will need to be a creative, inquisitive and enthusiastic person with a genuine interest in creative media production and post-production in all its various forms. You will be learning technical skills as well as writing and research methods.
You will be expected to be a good team worker and to be an independent learner.
You will be expected to own a DSLR camera and to have already taken steps towards being a film maker.

What formal entry requirements will I need?
Minimum requirements - 5 GCSEs at grade A-C/9- 4 including English and a subject relevant to your chosen area of study at grade 4.
OR
Level 2 Diploma at Distinction/Merit plus GCSE English at grade 4. A proven interest and commitment to film and television production.

What could the course lead to in higher education or careers?
The UAL Level 3 Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology- Moving Image is the first year of a nationally recognised qualification and is designed to prepare you for a career in the media industry. It offers progression the Extended Diploma also in Media. Achievement of the Extended Diploma is required for application to Higher Education. You will gain an insight into the media industry and your potential career path.
This course is designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills and understanding you will need to progress into Higher Education at Degree level or to employment in the media industry.

Are there any costs involved?
There will be occasional visits and optional field trips and you will be expected to pay your train fares and trip costs.

Are you aged over 19?
Students aged 19 or over on 31st August directly preceding their academic year may be required to pay tuition fees for that year of study. Advanced Learner Loans may be available for students studying at Level 3. If you are aged 19-23 as at 31 August and this is your first full Level 3 you may not have to pay fees.
Students who are 19-24 years old with Education Health and Care Plans (EHCP) issued by the Local Authority are not required to pay course fees (ie tuition fees are free). Students will be required to provide a final copy of their EHCP provided by the LA as evidence.
